AMSOIL Heavy-Duty Metal Protector
AMSOIL Heavy-Duty Metal Protector (product code AMHSC) is an aerosol corrosion inhibitor formulated for owners and operators who store vehicles, trailers, equipment, and tools through long off-season periods or in harsh marine, road-salt, and high-humidity environments. The spray-on formula displaces water, seals out moisture, and dries to a long-lasting, wax-like amber film that resists salt, chemical corrosion, and weathering on steel, iron, aluminum, brass, copper, and other metal surfaces.
Long-lasting wax-like amber film
Heavy-Duty Metal Protector goes on as a sprayable liquid and sets up into a dry, wax-like amber coating that does not wash off easily. The cured film provides protective service up to several years depending on application and environment, which makes the product well suited to seasonal storage, undercarriage protection, and long intervals between maintenance visits. The amber color makes it straightforward to confirm coverage on dark substrates such as raw steel, painted frames, and trailer rails.
Because the film is dry rather than oily after curing, treated parts can be moved, stacked, and stored without transferring product onto adjacent surfaces. Following the directions on the can, the film is touch-dry in roughly two hours and reaches full cure in approximately twelve hours under typical conditions.
Salt and moisture defense
The formula contains rust and corrosion inhibitor additives selected to protect metal exposed to salt, moisture, and chemical attack. In a cyclic salt-bath evaluation, aluminum and steel coupons were treated on their lower halves, submerged in a 5 percent saltwater bath for one hour, removed, and allowed to dry for 23 hours. The one-hour soak and 23-hour dry cycle was repeated for ten days. The portions coated with Heavy-Duty Metal Protector showed no signs of corrosion, while the untreated portions of the same coupons corroded as expected. That cycle mirrors the salt-and-dry exposure pattern that road vehicles, snow plows, snowblowers, and trailered equipment experience over a typical winter.
Water displacement and intrusion sealing
Heavy-Duty Metal Protector displaces water from the surface during application, allowing the inhibitor film to bond directly to clean metal rather than trapping a layer of moisture under the coating. The same water-displacing behavior helps seal switches, junction boxes, hinges, and cavity sections against the kind of repeated wetting that drives early corrosion failure on outdoor equipment.
Sprays into hard-to-reach places
The aerosol delivery and the included extension straw allow precision application into seams, frame rails, hinge pivots, cavity sections, fastener stacks, and other geometry that brushes and rollers cannot reach. The product can be used as a stand-alone undercoat or layered over compatible coatings to extend protection on wear points that are exposed to stone chips and road spray.
Broad substrate compatibility
Heavy-Duty Metal Protector is formulated for steel, iron, aluminum, brass, copper, and other common metal surfaces found on automotive chassis, trailers, off-season powersports vehicles, lawn and turf equipment, hand and shop tools, plows, fence hardware, and small metal castings. The wax-like cured film accommodates the different thermal-expansion behavior of mixed-metal assemblies without flaking under normal handling.
Recommended applications and service intervals
Heavy-Duty Metal Protector suits long-term protective storage and outdoor exposure where a durable, set-up film is preferred over a thin, oily maintenance spray. Common applications include automotive and trailer undercoat, spare-tire carriers, battery terminals, tailgate hinges, handheld tools, snow plows, mower decks and blades, snowblowers, skid-steer attachments, farm machinery, forklifts, and metal gates or fences.
- Seasonal storage: apply before winter or off-season storage; treated surfaces remain protected for up to several years depending on environment and abrasion exposure.
- Active service items: reapply where the film has been abraded, cleaned, or exposed to heavy spray washing.
- Not for use on surfaces that contact food, on hot engine components, or where a permanent paint-grade topcoat is required.
- Availability is limited to the United States; the product is not currently sold in Canada.
Shake the can well before use. Clean the target area, then apply in a uniform, even pass; the included extension straw improves coverage on tight geometry. Allow the coating to dry for approximately two hours and to reach full cure in twelve hours before placing the part back into service. Overspray on adjacent surfaces can be removed with AMSOIL Heavy-Duty Degreaser.

Very simple to use
Easy to use. I will definitely use this product again. This saved me money and hopefully my vehicle. I wish I had this years ago.

No rust
Trying to keep some rust off. Time will tell. Easy to apply.

Great Rust preventative
This works fantastic on bare metal or over painted metal that is not rusted yet, but do not put it over metal that is already rusted. There are better products for that.

Frequently asked questions
What is AMSOIL Heavy-Duty Metal Protector used for?
Heavy-Duty Metal Protector is a spray-on corrosion inhibitor used to protect metal components exposed to salt, moisture, and chemical corrosion. Typical jobs include trailer and automotive undercoat, winter storage of snow plows, snowblowers, mower decks, ATVs and snowmobiles, plus protection of hand tools, battery terminals, tailgate hinges, and farm and shop hardware.
Can Heavy-Duty Metal Protector be sprayed under a car or truck as an undercoat?
The formula is designed to spray into hard-to-reach places and work as an undercoat on automotive chassis and trailer frames. It bonds to steel, iron, aluminum, brass, and copper and dries to a wax-like amber film that is durable enough for chassis exposure to salt spray and high humidity.
How long does the coating last?
Treated surfaces remain protected for up to several years depending on application and environment. High-abrasion or frequently washed areas may need reapplication sooner, while sheltered or low-contact areas tend to hold the film at the longer end of that range.
Does it dry to a wet film or set up to a coating?
Heavy-Duty Metal Protector dries to a wax-like, amber film rather than staying wet or oily. Typical touch-dry time is approximately two hours, with full cure at about twelve hours under normal temperature and humidity.
What is the difference between Heavy-Duty Metal Protector (AMH) and MP Metal Protector (AMP)?
Heavy-Duty Metal Protector is the heavier, set-up-film product intended for long-term storage protection, undercoating, and harsh-environment exposure. MP Metal Protector is a lighter, more penetrating spray suited to active maintenance such as freeing fasteners and lubricating moving parts. For seasonal storage and chassis preservation, the heavier AMH film is the more durable choice.
Can Heavy-Duty Metal Protector be applied over existing rust?
The product is formulated to protect metal from the effects of water, salt, and high humidity rather than to remove or convert existing rust. For best results, apply to clean metal or to surfaces with light surface rust that have been wire-brushed and degreased before coating.
Is Heavy-Duty Metal Protector available in Canada?
No. Heavy-Duty Metal Protector is sold in the United States only and is not currently available in Canada.
