Five common lookup pitfalls
The vehicle lookup is fast but it is only as accurate as the inputs you give it. A handful of mistakes cause most of the wrong-product orders.
- Wrong sub-engine. A platform with a 1.5L turbo, a 2.0L turbo, and a 3.0L V6 has three different oil capacities and three different filter product codes. Confirm the engine code from the VIN before you click.
- Wrong submodel. Two trims that look the same can carry different axle ratios, different transfer cases, or a different rear differential. The lookup follows the submodel; pick the one on your registration, not the one closest to memory.
- Hybrid vs conventional. A hybrid SUV and the conventional version of the same SUV can run different engine families with different viscosity calls. AMSOIL builds a dedicated hybrid line that targets 0W-16 and 0W-20 fuel-economy oils with hybrid-specific additive tuning.
- Dual-fuel platforms. Flex-fuel and CNG variants can change which fuel-system additive applies even when the engine oil call is identical. Match the powertrain in the lookup, not just the badge.

AMSOIL vehicle lookup FAQ
Do I need a VIN to use the AMSOIL vehicle lookup?
No. Year, make, model, and engine are usually enough. Keep the VIN nearby for edge cases like option packages that change the front differential or transfer case, or platforms that ship with both naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions of the same displacement.
Why does the lookup ask for the engine?
One body style often runs two or three engines in the same model year, each with different oil capacity, viscosity, and OEM approval. A 2024 Ford F-150 with the 2.7L EcoBoost takes a different oil and filter than the same truck with the 5.0L Coyote V8. The lookup needs the engine to return the correct match.
Does the lookup work for motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and boats?
Yes. Powersports applications run on a separate path in the same tool. The motorcycle path returns V-twin or metric motorcycle oil and chaincase or transmission fluid where applicable. ATV and UTV applications return engine oil and front and rear gearcase lube. Snowmobile lookups separate 2-stroke (premix or injector) from 4-stroke, and marine lookups return outboard 2-stroke and 4-stroke oil plus lower-unit gear lube.
Should I trust the lookup or my owner's manual?
Use both. The lookup is the fast first pass that points you to the right AMSOIL product family. Confirm the SAE viscosity, the API service category, and any OEM specification listed in the maintenance section of the owner's manual before you order. On European cars in particular, the OEM specification is the deciding line, not the marketing viscosity printed on the bottle.
What if the lookup returns more than one motor oil option?
Multiple options usually mean the same OEM specification is met by more than one AMSOIL tier. Signature Series carries the longest published drain interval and the broadest OEM approval list. XL is the mid-tier extended-drain option. OE Synthetic matches the OEM service interval at the lowest price.
