Severe Gear 75W-110 (SVT) is the mid-heavy viscosity in the AMSOIL Severe Gear 100 percent synthetic extreme-pressure family, engineered for the front and rear differentials of half-ton and heavy-half-ton pickups, full-size SUVs, and tow rigs that call for an SAE 75W-110, API GL-5 hypoid gear lubricant. The 110 backbone is heavier than 75W-90 for high-load towing, hauling, and high ambient heat, and lighter than 75W-140 for everyday street and highway service.

Iron-sulfide barrier film for severe-duty wear protection

Hypoid ring-and-pinion contact in a half-ton or three-quarter-ton differential combines high sliding loads with shock from acceleration and uneven traction. Severe Gear 75W-110 uses proprietary AMSOIL extreme-pressure additives that form an iron-sulfide barrier film on gear faces, providing a tenacious line of defense against wear, pitting, and scoring while the synthetic base oil maintains viscosity in the loaded gear-mesh contact patch.

Heavy 110 viscosity for towing, hauling, and high heat

The 75W-110 grade carries a kinematic viscosity of 20.5 cSt at 100 degrees C and 132.6 cSt at 40 degrees C, measured per ASTM D445, with a viscosity index of 179 per ASTM D2270. That heavier 110 high-temperature viscosity is the right choice when an OEM calls for a 75W-110 in the rear axle of a Ford F-150 or Expedition, a GM Silverado or Tahoe, or a comparable heavy-half-ton truck or SUV pulling a trailer, hauling cargo, or running steep grades in hot weather. Where a 75W-90 thins out under sustained tow load, the 110 backbone keeps a heavier protective film on the ring and pinion.

Controls thermal runaway and resists high-heat breakdown

Under sustained heavy load, a gear lubricant that cannot keep friction in check enters thermal runaway, where rising oil temperature accelerates oxidation, friction climbs further, and the cycle feeds itself. Severe Gear 75W-110 is engineered to interrupt that loop, controlling friction and resisting breakdown from high heat to prevent acid formation and carbon and varnish deposits on gear and bearing surfaces. The result is slower lubricant degradation, lower operating temperatures, and longer seal, gear, and bearing life on tow rigs.

Wax-free chemistry, cold flow, and limited-slip compatibility

The wax-free synthetic construction stays fluid in deep cold, posting a Brookfield viscosity of 86,140 cP at minus 40 degrees C per ASTM D2983 and a pour point of minus 43 degrees C (minus 45 degrees F) per ASTM D97, so gear teeth see a continuous film sooner on cold starts. Built-in friction modifiers make the formula compatible with most clutch-type limited-slip differentials without an additional additive; where additional friction modifier is required, AMSOIL Slip Lock Differential Additive is the supported supplement. The formula posts a 1b rating on the ASTM D130 copper corrosion test at 121 degrees C over 3 hours and a foam stability result of 0/0, 10/0, 0/0 per ASTM D892.

Recommended applications and service intervals

Severe Gear 75W-110 (SVT) is intended for differentials, manual transmissions, and other gear applications that require an SAE 75W-110 GL-5 lubricant, including specifications API GL-5, API MT-1, MIL-PRF-2105E, Mack GO-J, and other GL-5-based specifications from Ford, GM, and Chrysler. It can also be used in axles where an API GL-4 lubricant is recommended. Confirm the correct viscosity grade and rear-axle capacity for the model year, axle code, and front or rear position with the AMSOIL vehicle lookup guide before changing fluid.

• Cars, SUVs, and light trucks (normal service): drain at 100,000 miles (161,000 km) or per the owner's manual, whichever is longer.
• Cars, SUVs, and light trucks (severe service such as towing, hauling, plowing, racing, off-road, frequent stop-and-go, or high ambient temperatures): drain at 50,000 miles (80,500 km) or per the owner's manual, whichever is longer.
• Heavy-Duty Class 8 line haul: follow the OEM synthetic-oil drain interval up to 250,000 miles (402,500 km) or three years, whichever comes first. Vocational and delivery: up to 120,000 miles (193,200 km) or three years. Heavy-Duty off-road: up to 100,000 miles or two years.
• For non-differential gear applications without a published synthetic interval, drain at twice the conventional oil interval. Service the lube more frequently in dusty or dirty conditions and any time water contamination is possible, and extended drain intervals are not supported when water is present.

Severe Gear 75W-110 is compatible with conventional and synthetic gear oils, but mixing shortens oil life and reduces performance benefits, and extended drain intervals are not supported on a mixed fill. Aftermarket gear oil additives outside the AMSOIL product line are not recommended.
