AMSOIL Synthetic Polymeric Off-Road Grease NLGI #1

AMSOIL Synthetic Polymeric Off-Road Grease NLGI #1 (GPOR1) is a heavy-duty, calcium-sulfonate-complex grease engineered for pin, bushing, and pivot lubrication on construction, mining, logging, agricultural, and landscaping equipment. The softer NLGI #1 consistency pumps more readily through long grease hose runs in cold weather, while a proprietary synthetic polymeric system gives the grease the adhesion and impact resistance needed to stay on heavily loaded components between service intervals.

Impact resistance for heavily loaded pins and bushings

Off-road equipment forces every pound of working load through the same pivot points, so grease has to absorb repetitive pounding without being squeezed out. The synthetic polymeric system in GPOR1 provides high adhesion to metal and cohesion within the grease film, which keeps lubricant in the wear zone under shock loading. A Four-Ball Weld Point of 620+ kgf in ASTM D-2596 and a Timken OK Load of 65+ lbs in ASTM D-2509 document the load-carrying capacity.

Cold-weather pumpability for centralized and bulk delivery

Grease intended for severe pin and bushing service is usually tacky and tough to move through long supply lines in winter. The NLGI #1 grade was developed for that scenario. GPOR1 pumps best in temperatures above 0 F, compared with the NLGI #2 version (GPOR2), which is rated to pump best in temperatures above 40 F. A heavy follower plate may be required when pumping the grease from larger package sizes such as the 120-lb. keg. Because the grease is engineered to stay in place over long service intervals, automatic or centralized lubrication systems are only suitable when the system is specifically designed to handle a tackier grease.

Moly fortified for pin and bushing service

The formulation is heavily fortified with molybdenum disulfide, which forms a sacrificial film on metal during boundary lubrication and absorbs impact when an oil film is momentarily squeezed out. The 5 percent moly content matches the level Caterpillar specifies for pin and bushing applications on dozers, loaders, and similar machines. The Four-Ball Wear Test scar measures less than 0.45 mm in ASTM D-2266, supporting protection of heavily loaded contact areas through long re-grease cycles.

Calcium-sulfonate complex thickener with extreme-pressure performance

The calcium-sulfonate complex thickener carries inherent extreme-pressure and corrosion-inhibiting properties without relying solely on additive package response. The Dropping Point reaches 321 C (610 F) in ASTM D-2265, giving margin for hot bearing housings and pivot points near exhaust components on operating equipment.

Water washout resistance and corrosion control

Wheel loaders moving aggregate, log skidders in wet ground, and graders pushing through standing water all expose grease points to constant water intrusion. GPOR1 produces only 1 percent loss in the ASTM D-1264 Water Washout test at 100 F, holding the seal at the bushing face so water and grit cannot reach the wear surface. The formulation also passes the ASTM D-1743 Corrosion Test, which guards bearings and journals against rust during seasonal storage.

Reduced grease consumption and longer service intervals

The same tenacity that resists impact reduces the volume of grease ejected from a fitting during repetitive pounding. Field service can either keep the current schedule and use less grease per cycle or extend the time between greasing, lowering lubricant, labor, and equipment-replacement cost over a season.

Recommended applications and service intervals

GPOR1 is built for heavy-duty, heavy-load-bearing service in adverse outdoor conditions. The NLGI #1 grade is the right choice when ambient temperatures, hose length, or pump capacity require a softer grease than the NLGI #2 version.

This grease is not recommended for automatic or centralized lubrication systems unless the system is engineered to pump a tackier grease. GPOR1 is compatible with many other types of greases, but switching greases is best handled by cleaning the old grease out where possible or flushing the mechanism with a liberal amount of GPOR1 while the equipment is in operation, then monitoring closely for any inconsistencies. Aftermarket grease additives are not required and are not recommended for use with AMSOIL synthetic greases.

What is NLGI #1 grease and how does it differ from NLGI #2?

NLGI grade measures grease consistency from very fluid (000) to very stiff (6). NLGI #1 is softer than the more common NLGI #2, with a worked penetration of 310 to 340 in ASTM D-217 versus 265 to 295 for NLGI #2. GPOR1 keeps the same calcium-sulfonate-complex chemistry and moly fortification as the NLGI #2 version but moves through long lines and cold pumps more readily.

When should GPOR1 be chosen instead of GPOR2?

Choose GPOR1 when ambient temperatures drop below the NLGI #2 pumping window, when supply lines on bulk dispensers or pump systems are long, or when a softer grease is needed to keep equipment serviced through winter. GPOR1 pumps best in temperatures above 0 F, compared with 40 F for GPOR2. Above 40 F, the NLGI #2 grade is generally the better fit for heavy off-road service.

Can GPOR1 be used in an automatic or centralized lubrication system?
