AMSOIL NLGI #2 Synthetic Polymeric Off-Road Grease

AMSOIL NLGI #2 Synthetic Polymeric Off-Road Grease is a heavy-duty multi-purpose grease engineered for the pivot pins, king pins, bucket pins, bushings, and bearings that take the highest loads on construction, mining, logging, agricultural, and earth-moving equipment. The formulation pairs a calcium-sulfonate complex thickener with a proprietary synthetic polymeric additive to deliver exceptional impact resistance, water washout resistance, and adhesion in wet, muddy, and high-shock service.

Polymeric technology for shock-load and impact resistance

Heavily loaded off-road components subject grease to severe pounding at the pivots and bushings, which can squeeze a lesser grease right out of the impact zone and leave metal-to-metal contact behind. The synthetic polymeric system in GPOR2 produces an unusually tenacious film with high adhesion (clinging to the component) and cohesion (clinging to itself), helping the grease stay in place under shock loads and across extended service intervals. Load-bearing capacity is verified by a Timken OK Load of 75+ lbs in ASTM D-2509 and a Four-Ball Weld Point of 620+ kgf in ASTM D-2596, paired with a Four-Ball Wear scar under 0.45 mm in ASTM D-2266.

Calcium-sulfonate complex thickener with high dropping point

The calcium-sulfonate complex thickener brings inherent extreme-pressure performance, mechanical stability, and rust protection to the formulation, characteristics that make it well suited to off-road grease points exposed to shock and contamination. NLGI #2 Synthetic Polymeric Off-Road Grease records a dropping point of 343 C (650 F) in ASTM D-2265 and passes the ASTM D-1743 corrosion test, meaning the structure holds at high operating temperature and resists rust on greased steel surfaces.

Heavily fortified with moly for pin and bushing protection

The grease is heavily fortified with molybdenum disulfide for maximum wear protection in heavily loaded, slow-moving pins and bushings. It is a fitting choice for equipment for which the manufacturer recommends 5 percent moly grease for pin and bushing applications, including equipment made by Caterpillar. The high Timken OK load combined with strong four-ball wear and weld results back the load-bearing claim with measured ASTM data.

Excellent water washout resistance for wet job sites

Off-road equipment in agriculture, mining, and logging is regularly worked in mud, slurry, snowmelt, and pressure-washing water. NLGI #2 Synthetic Polymeric Off-Road Grease records 1 percent loss in the ASTM D-1264 water washout test, meaning the grease maintains a continuous seal on greased components to keep water, dirt, and other contaminants out of wear-prone areas between service intervals.

Extended service life and reduced grease consumption

The combination of high adhesion, polymeric tenacity, and shock-load resistance lets GPOR2 keep working through repetitive pounding without being thrown out of the lube point. Field test results show the formulation can reduce grease consumption, allowing operators to either keep their current schedule and pump less per fitting or extend the time between re-greasing intervals. Reduced grease use, fewer missed-grease incidents, and stronger wear protection translate to lower lubricant, labor, and equipment-replacement costs over the season.

Recommended applications and service intervals

NLGI #2 Synthetic Polymeric Off-Road Grease is purpose-built for heavy-duty, heavy-load-bearing applications operating in the adverse conditions found in agricultural, construction, landscaping, logging, and mining environments. Typical lube points include pivot pins, king pins, bucket pins, bushings, and slow-moving bearings on heavy equipment.

The formulation is compatible with many other types of greases. When changing greases, the equipment should be cleaned of the old grease where possible or flushed with a liberal amount of fresh GPOR2 while the mechanism is in operation, then monitored closely for any inconsistencies. Compatibility questions on a specific grease point can be referred to the local AMSOIL representative or to AMSOIL technical services.

  • Works great on my Tractor!

This is my second purchase of Amsoil NLGI #2 Synthetic Polymeric Off-Road Grease. Works great on all points of my 60hp Kubota lubrication points and numerous attachments. It especially works great on my power grease gun.

Frequently asked questions

What is calcium-sulfonate complex grease?

Calcium-sulfonate complex is a thickener system that gives a grease inherent extreme-pressure performance, high mechanical stability, a high dropping point, and natural rust and corrosion protection without relying on heavy additive packages. It is the ideal thickener for off-road grease, which is why it is paired with the synthetic polymeric system in GPOR2 to deliver excellent shock-load and water washout resistance.

What does NLGI #2 mean for an off-road grease?

NLGI #2 is a National Lubricating Grease Institute consistency grade describing how stiff a grease is when worked. NLGI #2 falls in the middle of the scale at a worked penetration of 265 to 295 in ASTM D-217 and is the most common consistency for chassis, pin, and bushing service in heavy equipment. NLGI #1 (GPOR1) is softer and pumps better in cold weather, while NLGI #2 stays in place better at warmer temperatures and high loads.

Is GPOR2 a good fit for Caterpillar pin and bushing applications?

GPOR2 is heavily fortified with molybdenum disulfide and is a fitting choice for equipment for which the manufacturer recommends 5 percent moly grease for pin and bushing service, including equipment made by Caterpillar. Verify the moly content and grease grade specified for the specific machine before switching, then confirm pin and bushing application match with the AMSOIL Vehicle Lookup Guide.

How well does it resist water washout?

NLGI #2 Synthetic Polymeric Off-Road Grease records a 1 percent loss in ASTM D-1264 water washout testing, helping the grease keep a continuous seal on lubed components to block water, mud, and other contaminants from reaching wear-prone surfaces in agriculture, construction, mining, and logging duty.

Can it be used in cold weather?

GPOR2 pumps best at temperatures above 40 F. In service below that threshold the NLGI #1 grade (GPOR1) is the better choice because it is softer and pumps more easily at lower temperatures. Compare the two grades in the AMSOIL Grease Guide.

Is GPOR2 compatible with other greases already in the equipment?

NLGI #2 Synthetic Polymeric Off-Road Grease is compatible with many other types of greases. When changing greases the equipment should be cleaned of the old grease where possible or flushed with a liberal amount of fresh GPOR2 while the mechanism is in operation, with the system monitored closely for any inconsistencies during the transition.

Is it safe to use in automatic or centralized lubrication systems?

The same polymeric tenacity that helps the grease stay in place at heavily loaded pivots also makes it harder to pump through long lines, especially in cold weather. NLGI #2 Synthetic Polymeric Off-Road Grease is not recommended for automatic or centralized lubrication systems on heavy equipment unless the system is designed to successfully pump a tackier grease.
