AMSOIL Synthetic Polymeric Truck, Chassis, and Equipment Grease NLGI #2 (GPTR2) is an over-the-road and severe-service chassis grease formulated for medium- and heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and commercial equipment. Synthetic base oils, a calcium-sulfonate complex thickener, and proprietary polymeric chemistry combine to deliver high impact resistance, extended re-greasing intervals, and reliable corrosion protection on heavily loaded fittings.
Calcium-sulfonate complex thickener with polymeric reinforcement
The NLGI #2 grade carries a worked penetration of 265 to 295 (ASTM D217) and is built on a calcium-sulfonate complex thickener system, which contributes inherent extreme-pressure performance, rust resistance, and high-temperature stability without leaning on heavy add-treats. Polymeric chemistry blended into the synthetic base oil reinforces film strength and adhesion so the grease resists the throw-off, pound-out, and squeeze-out that strip film from chassis pivots, kingpins, and U-joints.
Extreme-pressure capacity for fifth-wheel plates and heavy chassis loads
Fifth-wheel plates, kingpins, slack adjusters, and heavily loaded chassis components apply shock loading and high contact pressure to the lubricant film. GPTR2 carries a Timken OK Load of 65 lbs (ASTM D2509) and a Four-Ball Weld Point of 620 kgf (ASTM D2596), demonstrating the load-carrying margin needed to keep boundary-lubrication wear under control on Class 6 to 8 trucks and trailers in over-the-road and vocational duty.
Adhesion and water washout resistance for wet, salty service
Over-the-road and municipal fleets see rain, snow, and brine year-round. GPTR2 records a 3 percent water washout (ASTM D1264) and passes the ASTM D1743 corrosion test, confirming the formula stays in the housing and on the metal in the presence of water spray and road-deicing chemicals. Polymeric tackiness reinforces that adhesion so the grease clings to chassis pivots and seal lips rather than washing or throwing off.
Thermal stability and dropping point
The dropping point of 260 C (500 F) (ASTM D2265) reflects the elevated thermal stability of the calcium-sulfonate complex thickener. The 220 cSt base oil viscosity at 40 C (ASTM D445) is heavy by passenger-grease standards, sized for the high contact loads and slow-speed pivoting motion of fifth-wheel plates, kingpins, and trailer suspension components rather than high-rpm bearings.
Extended re-greasing intervals and lower lifecycle cost
The polymer-fortified film stays intact under shock loading and elevated temperatures, so chassis points hold their lubricant longer between service stops. Fleets running scheduled chassis lubes on Class 6 to 8 tractors, trailers, refuse trucks, and dump bodies use that staying power to lengthen re-greasing intervals, reduce grease consumption, and cut downtime tied to wear failures on greased components.

GPTR2 is built for mixed fleets running severe service: heavy-duty over-the-road trucks and trailers, delivery fleets, dump trucks, refuse haulers, utility and emergency-service vehicles, sewer and septic trucks, snow-removal equipment, wreckers, municipal vehicles, equipment haulers, cement mixers, and airport ground support. Typical applications include heavily loaded chassis grease points, wheel bearings, axle assemblies, universal joints, pivot pins, fifth-wheel hitch plates, steering linkages, spring pins, king pins, ball joints, and water-pump bearings. Pumpability range: NLGI #2 (GPTR2) pumps best in temperatures above 40 F. NLGI #1 (GPTR1) is the lower-temperature companion grade and pumps best above 0 F. A heavy follower plate may be required when pumping from 35 lb. lugs, 120 lb. kegs, and 400 lb. drums.
Centralized and automatic lubrication systems: not recommended unless the system is engineered to pump a tackier grease. The same polymeric tenacity that extends service life on hand-greased fittings can exceed pump capacity on standard auto-lube setups.
Application maintenance: wipe grease fittings clean before injecting fresh grease to prevent contaminant ingestion, and keep bearing housings one-third to one-half full to control heat buildup. Avoid over-greasing.
Compatibility: this grease is compatible with many other types of grease, but during a changeover, clean the old grease from the housing or flush the mechanism with a liberal amount of AMSOIL Synthetic Polymeric Grease while it is in operation, then monitor for any inconsistencies.
Pair regular re-greasing with a clean grease gun, dedicated cartridges per grease type, and clean fittings to keep abrasive contaminants out of bearing surfaces and seal lips.

NLGI #1 versus NLGI #2: which grade fits the operation?
The two grades share the same calcium-sulfonate complex thickener, polymeric chemistry, and additive package, and differ in consistency. NLGI #2 (GPTR2, worked penetration 265-295) is the standard chassis grade and pumps best in temperatures above 40 F. NLGI #1 (GPTR1, worked penetration 310-340) is softer and pumps best above 0 F, which makes it the better fit for cold-weather operations and grease guns or systems that struggle with stiffer product. Fleets that move between climates often stock both.
Is GPTR2 a fit for automatic or centralized lubrication systems?
Not unless the auto-lube system is specifically designed to pump a tackier grease. The polymeric chemistry that gives this grease its staying power on heavily loaded chassis points also makes it harder to pump than conventional greases, and standard centralized systems can struggle to push it through long supply lines. For systems not rated for tackier product, the NLGI #1 grade or a different grease family is a better match.
Is GPTR2 compatible with other greases already in the housing?
The formula is compatible with many other types of grease. During a changeover, the cleanest path is to remove the old grease from the housing or flush the mechanism with a liberal amount of AMSOIL Synthetic Polymeric Grease while it is in operation, then monitor for any inconsistencies.
