AMSOIL Synthetic Multi-Purpose Grease is a calcium sulfonate complex, NLGI #2 grease built on premium synthetic base oils for chassis, wheel bearing, and general-service lubrication in passenger cars, trailers, light- and heavy-duty equipment, and powersports. Calcium sulfonate complex thickener for severe service
The calcium sulfonate complex thickener system gives the grease inherent extreme-pressure performance, water resistance, and thermal stability without relying solely on dosed additives. Premium synthetic base oils bring oxidation resistance and a wide operating temperature window of -40 F to 350 F (-40 C to 177 C). The finished grease is a smooth, tacky red lubricant that pumps cleanly through grease guns and centralized systems.
Load carrying and EP performance
Heavy chassis loads, shock loading from off-road service, and pressed-fit bushings demand a grease that does not film-fail under pressure. Synthetic Multi-Purpose Grease records a Four-Ball EP Weld Point of 620 kgf (ASTM D2596) and a Timken OK Load of 65 lbs (ASTM D2509), with a Four-Ball Wear scar of 0.40 mm (ASTM D2266). These results support use under heavy and abusive loads in roller bearings, plain bearings, thrust bearings, and pivot points where a general-purpose lithium grease would shear or weld.
High dropping point and thermal stability
Dropping point measures the temperature at which the thickener releases its base oil. The calcium sulfonate complex system carries a dropping point greater than 600 F (greater than 316 C) by ASTM D2265, well above the 350 F upper service temperature, which keeps the grease structured under sustained heat. High-Temperature Life testing on a tapered roller bearing rig (ASTM D3527) records 120 hours, supporting long bearing service in disc-brake-equipped wheel hubs and other heat-soaked positions.
Low-temperature pumpability and cold-season operability
Cold weather hardens conventional greases and starves bearings on the first revolution. Synthetic Multi-Purpose Grease records a low-temperature torque of 8.6 N m at -40 C (ASTM D4693), which is the test value for a grease that flows and pumps to the wear surface in extreme cold. Worked penetration of 280 (ASTM D217, 60 strokes) places the consistency squarely inside the NLGI #2 band for general grease-gun service, automotive chassis points, and central lubrication systems.
Water washout and corrosion control
Trailer hubs, marine-adjacent applications, agricultural equipment, and power-washed shop equipment lose conventional greases to water. - Not intended as a substitute for greases formulated for specific service categories that the equipment manual calls out by chemistry or specification, such as silicone disc brake caliper assembly grease or wet-clutch motorcycle grease.
Maintenance practice matters as much as grease selection. Wipe grease fittings clean before injecting fresh grease to prevent contaminant ingestion. Maintain bearing housings one-third to one-half full of grease and avoid over-greasing, which causes excessive heat buildup. Periodically clean and pack housings with fresh grease on a scheduled interval rather than relying only on top-up service. Great stuff - Multipurpose indeed
Man I love this stuff, and not just because it was free with my last order, I needed some for various needs around the garage. I couldn't help myself, I even used it on my Luminox Navy Seal wrist watch when I was replacing the O-ring back cover seal. So far, so good. Its official, I am an Amsoil fan, I have the Garage stool, the clock and Amsoil stickers everywhere. Its silly actually, but I don't cae. Good products are worth bragging about. Thanks Amsoil!
