AMSOIL ISO 22 100% Synthetic Anti-Wear Hydraulic Oil (product code AWG) is the lightest viscosity in the AMSOIL Synthetic AW Series, formulated for cold-climate mobile equipment, low-temperature presses, and zinc-bearing hydraulic systems that specify an ISO VG 22 anti-wear fluid. The synthetic base oils stay fluid below -60 degrees Celsius while the zinc-based anti-wear additive system protects pumps, motors, and valves through the full temperature swing.
Zinc-based anti-wear additive system
AWG is fortified with zinc-based anti-wear additives that shield gear, vane, and piston pumps from boundary-lubrication wear under high pressure. ASTM D4172 Four-Ball Wear testing at 40 kg, 1,200 rpm, 75 degrees Celsius, and 60 minutes produced a wear scar of 0.45 mm. Copper Strip Corrosion results of 1A under ASTM D130 confirm the formula is non-aggressive to copper, brass, and bronze valve components.
Ultra-high viscosity index for wide-temperature operation
Hydraulic systems that cycle from sub-zero startups to elevated working temperatures need a fluid that holds film strength at heat without thickening into a pumpability problem in the cold. AWG carries a viscosity index of 256 under ASTM D2270, holding 5.9 cSt at 100 degrees Celsius and 20.7 cSt at 40 degrees Celsius under ASTM D445. The wide, flat viscosity profile keeps pump output and cylinder speed consistent across season and shift.
Excellent cold-weather flow
Conventional ISO 22 hydraulic oils thicken in deep cold because of paraffinic wax content. AWG uses wax-free synthetic base oils and posts a pour point below -60 degrees Celsius (below -76 degrees Fahrenheit) under ASTM D97, so pumps, bearings, valves, and cylinder seals receive lubrication at the first crank instead of dry-starting through a slug of gelled fluid. Reliable cold flow reduces the pressure spikes that rupture hoses, blow seals, and crack pump housings during winter startup.
Oxidation and varnish resistance
Naturally resilient synthetic base oils combined with a potent anti-oxidant package resist the chemical breakdown that produces sludge, varnish, and acid in hot reservoirs. Cleaner systems mean fewer plugged orifices, fewer sticking servo valves, and longer life on hydraulic filters. The additive system also resists rust during humid storage and seasonal layup, with both fresh water and synthetic sea water passing the ASTM D665 A and B rust tests.
Water shedding and air release
AWG separates rapidly from contaminating water rather than holding a stable emulsion, recording 40/40/0 in the ASTM D1401 Demulsibility test within 10 minutes. Fast water shedding protects bearings and additive chemistry from hydrolysis. Dielectric strength and seal compatibility

Recommended applications and service intervals
AWG fits high- and low-pressure gear, vane, and piston stationary and mobile hydraulic systems that specify an ISO VG 22 zinc-bearing anti-wear fluid. Typical service includes dump trailers, log splitters, snow-plow and salt-spreader hydraulics, cold-storage warehouse lifts, sub-zero industrial presses, and any winter-operated mobile hydraulic package where conventional oil thickens into pump cavitation. Within the AMSOIL AW Series, the lightest AWG grade is generally reserved for the coldest ambient operating range, while the AWH (ISO 32) and AWI (ISO 46) grades carry the broader OEM approval list for warmer service.
General-purpose service: ISO VG 22 mobile and stationary hydraulic systems where extended drain intervals are desired.
Severe service: cold-climate, mobile, and stationary systems operating at temperature extremes, with oil analysis used to set drain intervals.
Exclusions: not for systems specifying phosphate-ester, silicone, or water-based hydraulic fluids, and not for systems whose OEM specifies an R&O-only fluid free of zinc anti-wear chemistry.
Outside US and Canada: confirm local viscosity grade and OEM approval requirements against the equipment manufacturer service guide before installation.
For optimum performance, drain the system completely and, when warranted, flush before installation. AWG is compatible with standard hydraulic seal elastomers, petroleum hydraulic oils, and most synthetic hydraulic oils, but mixing dilutes the synthetic additive performance and shortens the effective drain interval. Pair the fluid with an AMSOIL hydraulic filter sized to the system flow rate, and use periodic oil analysis to verify cleanliness and additive depletion when stretching drain intervals.

Hydraulic oil
So far I am impressed . Test of time will be the deciding factor . This hydraulic oil fluid is totally different in appearance and viscosity from traditional Hydraulic oils. I have trusted Amsoil for 30 years and I use their oils in all my equipment , ( boat, mowers ,2 cycle etc.) If it uses oil it runs on Amsoil.
ISO VG 22 is a light hydraulic grade with a kinematic viscosity near 22 cSt at 40 degrees Celsius. It is typically specified for cold-climate mobile hydraulic equipment, low-temperature presses, and systems whose equipment manufacturer calls for an ISO 22 anti-wear fluid. Heavier ISO 32, 46, and 68 grades are used in warmer ambient service or systems specifying those higher viscosities.
Is AWG an anti-wear or an R&O hydraulic oil?
