AMSOIL ISO 22 100% Synthetic Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil

AMSOIL ISO 22 100% Synthetic Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil (HVG) is a low-viscosity, high-VI fluid built for mobile and stationary hydraulic systems that swing between deep cold starts and full operating heat. The varnish-control chemistry, shear-stable formulation and zinc-type anti-wear additives target the wear, deposit, and cold-flow problems that drive downtime in snowplow trucks, mobile cranes, dump trucks, refuse trucks, log splitters, and outdoor industrial hydraulics that run year-round in northern climates.

Wide-temperature multi-viscosity flow

This is a true multi-viscosity hydraulic fluid, not a straight ISO 22. A viscosity index of 161 (ASTM D2270) lets the oil stay light enough for fast cold pickup yet thick enough to maintain its protective film as the system heats up. Without the waxes inherent to conventional fluids, the formula flows more readily in cold temperatures so bearings, valves and other components receive almost immediate lubrication at startup, reducing long-term wear and the pressure spikes and erratic operation that follow poor fluidity.

Cold-weather pour point and startup response

Pour point hits -49°C (-56°F) by ASTM D97, which clears the way for cold cranking of pumps in outdoor equipment that sits overnight in winter conditions. The combination of low pour point and high viscosity index translates into shorter warm-up cycles, faster response from servos and cylinders, and fewer cavitation events when a cold pump first picks up suction.

Varnish control for cleaner systems

ISO 22 Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil is fortified with anti-varnish additives that chemically react with the building blocks of varnish, inhibiting its formation. The result is cleaner reservoirs, valves, servos and proportional controls, fewer stuck-valve complaints and longer drain intervals. In severe oxidation testing, the synthetic formulation resisted elevated heat and oxidation more effectively than a leading conventional ISO 46 hydraulic fluid in the Aluminum Beaker Oxidation Test (tested April 2012).

Anti-wear protection in pump testing

The shear-stable formulation is fortified with the latest zinc-type anti-wear additives for pumps, motors, valves, and other components. Four-Ball Wear Test results (ASTM D4172, 40 kg, 1200 rpm, 75°C, 60 min.) measure 0.42 mm. After 608 hours of strenuous pump testing in a Parker Hannifin (Denison) T6H20C Hybrid pump, the piston shoes showed only moderate polishing and trace random scratches, and the vane pump cam ring exhibited only light polishing and trace scratching, confirming wear protection and compatibility with yellow metals.

Specifications and OEM viscosity-retention

HVG meets the stringent viscosity-retention requirements of Parker Hannifin (Denison) HF-0 and passes the KRL Shear Test with less than 15 percent KV loss to retain its ISO 22 grade in service. Copper Strip Corrosion (ASTM D130, 100°C, 3 hrs.) rates 1A, confirming yellow-metal compatibility. Rust testing in distilled and salt water (ASTM D665A and D665B) passes, and the seal-compatibility test against SRE-NBR1 elastomer (ASTM D471, 100°C, 168 hrs.) passes.

Foam control, water release and dielectric strength

Foam tendency in ASTM D892 Sequences I, II and III sits at 0/0, 10/0, 0/0 mL, keeping aeration low in high-cycle pump loops. Demulsibility by ASTM D1401 separates 40-40-0 in 20 minutes, so condensed water drops to the bottom of the reservoir for easy drain instead of holding in emulsion. Dielectric strength by ASTM D877 measures 47 kV AC, useful in systems where stray current and arcing across contaminated fluid are a concern.

Recommended applications and service intervals

Use ISO 22 Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil in high- and low-pressure gear, vane and piston hydraulic systems, both stationary and mobile, including systems with bronze metallurgy. ISO 22 is the right grade for cold-climate mobile hydraulics and outdoor equipment that has to crank in subfreezing temperatures.

Pair the fluid with a clean, properly rated hydraulic filter and bring system cleanliness into target ISO 4406 codes before topping off. AMSOIL synthetic hydraulic fluids mix with conventional and other synthetic hydraulic fluids, but mixing dilutes the benefits of the synthetic formulation, so a clean changeover is recommended. Aftermarket additives are not required and can disturb the additive balance; the fluid is fully formulated.

Frequently asked questions

What is ISO 22 hydraulic oil?

ISO 22 is a low-viscosity hydraulic fluid graded by ASTM D2422 at 22 cSt nominal at 40°C. It is the standard grade for cold-climate mobile hydraulic equipment and outdoor industrial systems that need fast cold-start response from a pump. AMSOIL ISO 22 100% Synthetic Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil measures 23.6 cSt at 40°C and 5.2 cSt at 100°C, with a viscosity index of 161.

What is the difference between ISO 22 and ISO 32 hydraulic oil?

ISO 32 is thicker at operating temperature and is the more common indoor or moderate-climate grade. ISO 22 is one step lighter, with lower pour point and better cold-start flow, so it is the right choice for outdoor and cold-weather mobile equipment when the OEM hydraulic chart calls for an HV ISO 22 grade.

Is this a multi-viscosity or single-grade hydraulic fluid?

HVG is a multi-viscosity, high-VI synthetic hydraulic fluid. The 161 viscosity index by ASTM D2270 keeps the fluid stable across a wide ambient and operating range, so the same fluid handles a subfreezing cold start and a hot summer afternoon without falling out of grade. The KRL Shear Test confirms the oil stays in grade after high-shear operation.

What temperature range does ISO 22 multi-viscosity hydraulic oil cover?

Pour point sits at -49°C (-56°F) per ASTM D97, and flash point sits at 228°C (442°F) per ASTM D92, giving a wide cold-to-hot window. The shear-stable formulation maintains its protective viscosity in extreme heat for strong lubricating film and excellent wear protection.

What OEM and industry specifications does HVG meet?

HVG meets the viscosity-retention requirements of Parker Hannifin (Denison) HF-0 and is validated by 608 hours in a Parker Hannifin (Denison) T6H20C Hybrid pump showing only moderate polishing on the piston shoes and light polishing on the vane pump cam ring.

Can ISO 22 hydraulic oil be mixed with other hydraulic fluids?

The synthetic formulation is compatible with conventional and other synthetic hydraulic fluids, but blending dilutes the varnish-control, anti-wear, and cold-flow benefits. A clean changeover with a new filter is the recommended approach so the system gets the full performance of the synthetic fluid.

How is this fluid sold and is it covered by a warranty?

HVG ships in 5-gallon pails, 55-gallon drums and 275-gallon totes for hydraulic shops, fleet operators, and industrial buyers. AMSOIL synthetic lubricants are backed by the AMSOIL Limited Warranty; full warranty terms are published in the AMSOIL Limited Warranty document linked from the product page.
