AMSOIL 5W-50 100% Synthetic ATV/UTV Motor Oil

AMSOIL 5W-50 100% Synthetic ATV/UTV Motor Oil is a severe-service synthetic engine oil for hard-working and high-performance ATVs and UTVs that call for an SAE 5W-50 grade. The 5W cold rating supports startups in cool conditions while the SAE 50 hot rating provides a heavier oil film for hot, high-revving engines, including the Polaris Ranger, RZR, Sportsman, and General. The formula is Warranty Secure, JASO MA wet-clutch friendly, and engineered as a high-performance alternative to OEM-branded fluids.

Severe-service engine protection

Modified machines fitted with roof and door panels, skid plates, winches and plows place added load on the engine. Aggressive trail riding, rock crawling, dune running and slow-speed work in deep terrain raise sump temperatures and accelerate breakdown of standard-service oils. The 5W-50 synthetic formulation delivers reserve protection against heat and helps reduce wear in heavily loaded, shrouded engines.

Four-Ball Wear Test results of 0.52 mm scar diameter (ASTM D4172) and a high-temperature, high-shear viscosity of 5.3 cP at 150 degrees Celsius (ASTM D5481) document the oil's ability to maintain a protective film when temperatures and contact pressures climb during severe-duty operation.

Hot-temperature film for high-output engines

SAE 50 viscosity at operating temperature gives turbocharged Polaris RZR platforms, the Polaris Ranger XD 1500 and other high-output sport ATVs and UTVs a heavier hydrodynamic film for bearings, valvetrain, and turbo components. Kinematic viscosity of 20.1 cSt at 100 degrees Celsius and 128.2 cSt at 40 degrees Celsius (ASTM D445) sit in the upper portion of the SAE 50 grade, supporting hot-climate riding, towing, plowing, and sustained high-rpm operation.

The synthetic base resists thinning under mechanical shear and oxidation. NOACK volatility of 4.7 percent weight loss (ASTM D5800) limits evaporative loss between drains, helping the oil hold its grade through long, hot rides.

Subzero startup flow

A pour point of -48 degrees Celsius (-54 degrees Fahrenheit) (ASTM D97) and the 5W cold-cranking rating let the oil reach bearings and valvetrain quickly on subzero cold starts. A viscosity index of 179 (ASTM D2270) keeps viscosity change predictable across the wide ambient swing common to year-round powersports use, so the oil pumps reliably in winter and still protects in summer heat.

Wet-clutch compatible, JASO MA friction durability

Built without friction modifiers and meeting the JASO MA wet-clutch standard, this 5W-50 supports smooth shifting and positive clutch engagement in shared-sump ATV and UTV powertrains. Friction-durability properties help minimize clutch slippage, fade and chatter, supporting consistent clutch feel during takeoffs and when maneuvering around obstacles on the trail.

Purpose-built alternative to Polaris PS-4 5W-50

Formulated specifically for Polaris Ranger, RZR, Sportsman, and General machines that call for an SAE 5W-50 motor oil, this oil is engineered as a direct, cost-effective replacement for Polaris PS-4 Full Synthetic 5W-50 Engine Oil. It carries Warranty Secure status under the AMSOIL Limited Warranty and is a high-performance alternative to original equipment manufacturer fluids that does not void the factory warranty.

Recommended applications and service intervals

Use AMSOIL 5W-50 100% Synthetic ATV/UTV Motor Oil in ATVs and UTVs whose owner manuals specify a 5W-50 motor oil, including Polaris Ranger, RZR, Sportsman, and General models. Match the viscosity recommended by the original equipment manufacturer for the machine and the operating climate. Confirm the right grade with the vehicle lookup guide before ordering.

Pair with an AMSOIL oil filter listed for the machine in the oil filter guide. The 5W-50 is compatible with other synthetic and conventional motor oils; mixing, however, shortens the oil's life expectancy and reduces performance benefits, and extended drain intervals are not supported on mixed fills. Aftermarket oil additives are not recommended.

  • Great oil

Great oil but many small engine vehicles need only .8 of a quart. We're wasting a lot of oil as a country. .2 of a quart at a time.

Frequently asked questions

Is this 5W-50 a direct substitute for Polaris PS-4 Full Synthetic 5W-50?

Yes. The 5W-50 ATV/UTV Motor Oil is formulated specifically as a high-performance alternative to Polaris PS-4 Full Synthetic 5W-50 Engine Oil for Polaris Ranger, RZR, Sportsman, and General models that call for an SAE 5W-50 grade.

Will running this oil void the Polaris factory warranty?

No. Using AMSOIL synthetic lubricants in the manufacturer-specified viscosity and service interval does not void the factory warranty. The 5W-50 is Warranty Secure and is covered by the AMSOIL Limited Warranty.

Is the 5W-50 wet-clutch compatible?

Yes. The formula meets the JASO MA wet-clutch standard, contains no friction modifiers and supports smooth shifting and positive clutch engagement in shared-sump ATV and UTV powertrains.

How does 5W-50 compare to 10W-50 and 0W-50 ATV/UTV oils?

The 5W-50 carries the same SAE 50 hot-temperature film as a 10W-50 with stronger cold-cranking flow, useful for cool-morning starts and machines that ship from the factory with a 10W-50 in the warm-weather chart. A 0W-50 is the cold-weather choice when the manufacturer specifies 0W-50 (the Polaris PS-4 Extreme equivalent). Choose 5W-50 when the manual calls out 5W-50 specifically.

How often should the oil be changed in a Polaris RZR or Ranger running this oil?

Follow the original equipment manufacturer's oil-change recommendation for the specific model and duty cycle. The 5W-50 ATV/UTV Motor Oil's service-life statement defers to the OEM oil-change interval, with no extended drain published for ATV and UTV applications.

Can the 5W-50 be mixed with PS-4 or another oil already in the engine?

The synthetic chemistry is compatible with other synthetic and conventional motor oils, but mixing shortens the oil's life expectancy and reduces performance benefits. Extended drain intervals are not supported on mixed fills, and aftermarket oil additives are not recommended for use with the 5W-50.

Does the 5W-50 fit a Can-Am Maverick X3 or similar 5W-40 machine?

No. The Can-Am Maverick X3 and similar Can-Am, CFMOTO, and Kawasaki UTVs are listed for AMSOIL 5W-40 Synthetic ATV/UTV Motor Oil, not 5W-50. Match the grade specified in the owner manual; for help selecting a grade, consult the ATV and UTV oil guide.
