AMSOIL 0W-20 100% Synthetic Diesel Oil

AMSOIL 0W-20 100% Synthetic Diesel Oil is a fully synthetic light-duty diesel engine oil built for smaller American diesel pickups, vans, cars, and SUVs that specify a GM dexosD 0W-20 grade. The formula combines top-tier synthetic base oils with a soot-handling detergent and dispersant package designed to keep modern diesel emissions hardware clean, hold viscosity through high-temperature service, and flow dependably on cold-soaked starts at the OEM-recommended drain interval.

Wear protection that exceeds the industry standard

Wear on camshaft lobes can quietly degrade valve timing and pull horsepower and fuel economy down with it. AMSOIL 0W-20 100% Synthetic Diesel Oil develops a strong fluid film that keeps metal surfaces separated, reinforced by anti-wear additives that further reduce wear in metal-to-metal contact regions for maximum engine life. Third-party testing shows the formula delivers up to 6X more wear protection than required by a leading industry standard, based on testing in the OM646LA cam wear test using 0W-20 as worst-case representation. The Four-Ball Wear Test (ASTM D4172) records a 0.48 mm scar for the 0W-20 grade.

Soot dispersancy and viscosity stability

Soot is a byproduct of normal diesel combustion. Without strong dispersancy, soot particles agglomerate into larger abrasive contaminants that grind on rings, liners, lifters, and bearings, and they thicken the oil as the drain interval progresses. The advanced synthetic base oils and detergent and dispersant additives in this 0W-20 minimize viscosity change while keeping soot particles suspended independently, helping prevent the formation of those larger wear-causing particles. Lower volatility further protects working viscosity after high-temperature service, supporting steady oil pressure, sustained protection, and improved fuel economy. The 0W-20 grade holds an HTHS viscosity of 2.78 cP (ASTM D5481) and a NOACK volatility of 10.0 percent (ASTM D5800).

Cold-start flow and hot-temperature stability

The formula resists thermal breakdown better than conventional diesel oils, providing clean engine operation and helping maintain power and fuel efficiency at high engine load. On the cold side, the 0W winter rating means the oil flows dependably in sub-zero temperatures for easier starting, faster oil delivery to bearings and the turbocharger, and reduced cold-start wear on remote-start mornings and short-trip duty cycles. The 0W-20 grade reaches a CCS viscosity of 5,590 cP at -35 C (ASTM D5293), a pour point of -48 C (ASTM D97), and a viscosity index of 176, well within reach of modern diesel low-temperature performance targets.

Low oil consumption and emissions-system compatibility

Low NOACK volatility limits how much oil vapor escapes the crankcase during high-temperature service, which keeps measurable oil consumption in check and reduces the amount of vapor that travels through the PCV path into the intake. AMSOIL 0W-20 100% Synthetic Diesel Oil is safe for diesel emissions systems and is formulated with a controlled sulfated ash level of 0.80 percent by weight, in line with the requirements for modern aftertreatment hardware that includes the diesel particulate filter, diesel oxidation catalyst, and selective catalytic reduction system on dexosD-equipped engines. Total Base Number sits at 7.1 (ASTM D2896) for steady acid neutralization across the OEM-recommended interval.

Compatibility and additive policy

This oil is compatible with other conventional and synthetic engine oils, but mixing shortens oil life and reduces the performance benefits that justify the upgrade. Aftermarket oil additives are not recommended for use with AMSOIL synthetic diesel oils. Owners running fuel additives separately from the engine oil program can continue to do so as the engine builder directs.

Recommended applications and service guidance

Use the live AMSOIL product page and your owner's manual to confirm the current viscosity, API category, OEM approvals, and service guidance for your engine before ordering. AMSOIL updates approvals and recommendations as formulas and manufacturer requirements change.

For extended service, follow the current AMSOIL guidance, your equipment manual, and oil-analysis results. Extended intervals are not appropriate for every engine or operating condition, especially modified engines, unusual fuels, racing use, or equipment with special service restrictions.

  • Works great. But wish it came in a 5L jug

I love the product but wish it came in a 5 liter jug for less plastic waste. If it is available, it was not on the order site.

  • Great Stuff

Just had my oil pump belt replaced at 150K and my mechanic noted that everything still is good as new when he removed the back plate from the motor. The little Durmax seems to love it just like every other vehicle I have run AMSOIL in. Been a customer for over twenty years and zero complaints!

Frequently asked questions

What is GM dexosD?

GM dexosD is the General Motors specification for engine oils used in modern light-duty diesel applications, including diesel pickups, vans, cars, and SUVs that call for a low-viscosity 0W-20 grade. The 0W-20 (DP020) grade of AMSOIL 100% Synthetic Diesel Oil carries dexosD approval and is built for engines that specifically require this category.

What vehicles take AMSOIL 0W-20 100% Synthetic Diesel Oil?

The 0W-20 grade is intended for smaller American diesel pickups, vans, cars, and SUVs that specify a GM dexosD 0W-20 oil from the factory. Always match the engine manufacturer specification before changing oil. The AMSOIL Vehicle Lookup Guide returns the correct grade and approval set for a given year, make, model, and engine.

Is a 0W-20 too thin for a diesel engine?

For engines that were engineered for a 0W-20, the answer is no. Modern light-duty diesel engines that carry the dexosD 0W-20 specification were designed around tight clearances, low-friction internal hardware, and fuel-economy targets that depend on a 0W-20 grade. For older or heavier-duty diesel engines that require an API CK-4, SP, or earlier specification, a 0W-20 is not the right choice and a Heavy-Duty or Signature Series Max-Duty diesel oil should be used instead.

How often should AMSOIL 0W-20 diesel oil be changed?

The 0W-20 grade is recommended for the drain intervals stated by the original equipment manufacturer. Refer to the owner manual for the specific oil change interval, and change the oil filter at the time of oil change. Drain intervals may be extended beyond the OEM recommendation with oil analysis, especially for owners tracking trends across multiple changes.

Is AMSOIL 0W-20 100% Synthetic Diesel Oil safe for the DPF and SCR system?

Yes. The formula is safe for diesel emissions systems and is built around a controlled sulfated ash level of 0.80 percent by weight, consistent with modern aftertreatment requirements that include the diesel particulate filter, diesel oxidation catalyst, and selective catalytic reduction hardware on dexosD-equipped engines.

Is the 0W-20 diesel oil interchangeable with AMSOIL Signature Series 0W-20 gasoline motor oil?

No. Although both are 0W-20 grades, the diesel formula carries the GM dexosD specification, while AMSOIL Signature Series 0W-20 gasoline motor oil carries gasoline-engine categories such as API SP, ILSAC GF-6A, and dexos1 Gen 3. Match the spec required by the engine builder, not just the SAE viscosity grade. The AMSOIL Diesel Oil Guide sorts the diesel and gasoline catalogs by specification.

Will running AMSOIL 0W-20 100% Synthetic Diesel Oil void a new vehicle warranty?

No. Using AMSOIL synthetic lubricants and practicing extended drain intervals does not void a new vehicle or equipment manufacturer warranty, and all AMSOIL lubricants and filters are covered by the AMSOIL Limited Warranty.
