AMSOIL 5W-40 MS 100% Synthetic European Motor Oil is a fully synthetic gasoline and diesel engine oil engineered for European vehicles that specify an SAE 5W-40 grade with mid-SAPS chemistry. The formulation meets API SN, SM, and CF service categories and carries ACEA C3 alongside a broad set of European OEM approvals, making it a application match-friendly choice for late-model BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, and other European cars whose owner manuals call for a 5W-40 oil compatible with diesel particulate filters and modern catalytic converters.
ACEA C3 chemistry built for emissions hardware
European exhaust treatment devices are sensitive to the sulfated ash, phosphorus, and sulfur (SAPS) content of motor oil. 5W-40 MS uses a precisely balanced low-SAPS additive system that meets ACEA C3, the mid-SAPS standard developed for cars equipped with diesel particulate filters and three-way catalysts. The result is detergency and anti-wear performance compatible with downstream emissions hardware, helping protect filter elements and catalysts from the ash loading that can shorten their service life.
Broad European OEM approval coverage
This 5W-40 grade is approved against a wide cross-section of European manufacturer specifications, including Mercedes-Benz 229.51, BMW Longlife-04, Porsche A40, Volkswagen 502.00 and 505.01, GM dexos 2, Chrysler MS-10850, Ford WSS-M2C917-A, and Renault RN0700 and RN0710. The same bottle covers many BMW gasoline turbo and diesel engines that call for LL-04, Mercedes-Benz diesel applications under 229.51, and Volkswagen and Audi TFSI gasoline engines that require 502.00 or 505.01.
Turbocharger thermal protection
Direct-injection turbocharged engines push bearing temperatures high enough to break weaker oils down and form deposits in a process known as turbo coking. 5W-40 MS uses a thermally stable synthetic base oil package that resists oxidation and helps cool the turbocharger under sustained load. The fluid posts a flash point of 226 C (438.8 F) and a fire point of 238 C (460.4 F) measured with ASTM D92, supporting consistent oil film integrity at the turbo bearing during high-output operation.
Sludge, varnish, and engine cleanliness
European long-drain service intervals demand strong oxidation stability and detergency to prevent deposit formation in oil galleries and ring lands. The 5W-40 MS formula carries a Total Base Number of 8 to neutralize combustion acids over time and resist the buildup of sludge and varnish that contributes to oil consumption and ring sticking. NOACK volatility comes in at 7.2 percent weight loss in ASTM D5800, helping limit oil burn-off and keep additive concentrations stable across the drain interval.
Cold-start flow and shear stability
Cold cranking viscosity governs how quickly the oil reaches bearings and turbo journals at startup. 5W-40 MS delivers a cold cranking simulator value of 5,628 cP at -30 C in ASTM D5293, supporting rapid pumpability on cold winter mornings and a fast return to oil pressure at the turbo. Once warmed up, the oil holds a kinematic viscosity of 14.4 cSt at 100 C, a viscosity index of 173, and a high-temperature high-shear viscosity of 4.1 cP measured with ASTM D5481. That HTHS value sits comfortably above the 3.5 cP minimum that ACEA C3 and most European 5W-40 specifications require, preserving fluid film thickness in hot, high-load operation.
Recommended applications and service intervals
5W-40 MS is built for gasoline or diesel European vehicles that require any of the following specifications: API SN, SM, CF; ACEA C3; Mercedes-Benz 229.51; BMW Longlife-04; Porsche A40; Chrysler MS-10850; GM dexos 2; Volkswagen 502.00, 505.01; Ford WSS-M2C917-A; Renault RN0700, RN0710. The owner manual viscosity and approval should be confirmed before the oil is used.
Service intervals: recommended for the extended drain intervals established by the vehicle manufacturer.
Filter service: change the oil filter at every oil change to take full advantage of the long-drain interval.
Compatibility: this oil is compatible with other synthetic and conventional motor oils, but mixing shortens oil life and reduces performance benefits, and extended drain intervals are not supported when oils have been mixed.
Aftermarket oil additives are not recommended for use with AMSOIL synthetic motor oils.
AMSOIL Oil Filters are designed to support the long European drain intervals this oil is built for. With other-brand filters, the filter manufacturer's interval should be respected. Oil level should be checked regularly between changes, and used oil and bottles should be recycled.

For 20 years I am using the Amsoil and will mot use anything else. I owned many (more than 20) different cars during these years and always used Amsoil. My mechanic wouldn’t believe I was really planning to change the oil every 10 or 25 k miles, but after changing it couple of times and seeing the condition of the used oil and my engine now he is not surprised anymore .
MS refers to mid-SAPS, the additive chemistry category covered by ACEA C3. Mid-SAPS oils carry a controlled level of sulfated ash, phosphorus, and sulfur so that combustion residues do not overwhelm diesel particulate filters and modern catalytic converters. Vehicles with DPF or GPF emissions hardware that call for ACEA C3 5W-40 should run a mid-SAPS oil rather than a full-SAPS European 5W-40.
Which European OEM approvals does 5W-40 MS meet?
The 5W-40 MS grade meets API SN, SM, CF and ACEA C3, and is approved or recommended against Mercedes-Benz 229.51, BMW Longlife-04, Porsche A40, Volkswagen 502.00 and 505.01, GM dexos 2, Chrysler MS-10850, Ford WSS-M2C917-A, and Renault RN0700 and RN0710. The owner manual should list one of these specifications before the oil is used.
Is 5W-40 MS suitable for diesel engines with a particulate filter?
Yes. ACEA C3 mid-SAPS chemistry is specifically engineered for diesel engines fitted with diesel particulate filters and for gasoline engines with three-way catalysts and gasoline particulate filters. 5W-40 MS is approved against Mercedes-Benz 229.51, a common diesel approval, and meets the SAPS limits required to protect downstream emissions hardware.
Can a European 5W-40 be used in an American car?
Only when the owner manual lists 5W-40 and one of the API or ACEA categories this oil meets. Most domestic North American gasoline engines specify lower viscosity grades such as 5W-30 or 0W-20 and require API SP or SN Plus rather than ACEA C3, in which case a different AMSOIL family is the correct choice. Confirm the right grade for the vehicle with the AMSOIL Vehicle Lookup Guide.
What is the difference between 5W-40 MS and 5W-40 FS?
5W-40 MS is the mid-SAPS, ACEA C3 grade for vehicles with diesel particulate filters and modern emissions hardware. The FS grade is the full-SAPS, ACEA A3/B4 counterpart used in older European engines without DPFs that call for BMW LL-01, MB 229.5, Porsche A40 in its A3/B4 form, or VW 502.00 and 505.00. Substituting one for the other is not recommended; match the SAPS class to the OEM approval listed in the owner manual.
How long can 5W-40 MS stay in service?
This oil is recommended for the extended drain intervals established by the vehicle manufacturer. European service indicators and condition-based oil monitors should be followed as designed. The oil filter should be changed at every oil change.
Will using AMSOIL synthetic oil void a new vehicle warranty?
No. Using AMSOIL synthetic lubricants does not void a new vehicle or equipment manufacturer warranty, and AMSOIL products are backed by the AMSOIL Limited Warranty.
