AMSOIL Semi-Synthetic Bar and Chain Oil is a tacky bar oil formulated to lubricate the guide bar, drive sprocket, and saw chain on gas and electric chainsaws across light, medium, and heavy-duty cutting. A semi-synthetic basestock blend combined with anti-wear additives and a tackifier package holds the lubricant on the chain as it travels at saw speed and resists fling-off in cold and warm operating temperatures. The formulation is intended for chainsaw bar oilers in residential, professional logging, and arborist use, and for bicycle chains where a sticky, slow-shedding lubricant is preferred over a thin oil.
The tackifier system gives Semi-Synthetic Bar and Chain Oil an adhesive, stringy texture that bonds the lubricant to metal surfaces. As the chain wraps around the bar at cutting speed, centrifugal force tries to throw lubricant off the cutters and the tie straps. The tacky formula clings to metal surfaces better than thinner non-tacky bar oils, which keeps the chain coated through the cut, slows the rate at which the reservoir empties, and reduces oil mist around the operator.
The chain rides against the rails of the guide bar under continuous load, and the drive sprocket transfers torque from the clutch drum to the chain. Anti-wear additives in the formula build a sacrificial film on the bar rails, the sprocket teeth, and the chain rivets so the surfaces are protected when fresh oil cannot reach the contact zone. The film slows wear on the bar groove, the sprocket nose, and the chain drive links, extending the service life of the cutting set between replacements.
Bar oil viscosity matters most in cold conditions, because a chilled bar oil pump can struggle to lift thick oil out of the reservoir and into the bar groove. Semi-Synthetic Bar and Chain Oil holds a pour point of -33 C (-27 F) in ASTM D97 testing, which keeps the oil mobile through the chainsaw bar oiler at typical winter cutting temperatures. The same grade is run through summer cutting because the basestock blend resists thinning under heat from the bar tip and the cutting interface, recorded as a 234 C fire point in ASTM D92 testing.
Continuous contact between the cutters and the wood generates frictional heat at the rails, the drive links, and the cutter edge. Adequate lubrication carries that heat away from the bar groove and the chain rivets and limits the temperature rise that anneals cutter steel and dulls the chain. The semi-synthetic blend keeps the chain coated through the cut and resists the gummy sawdust paste that can form when light oils dilute or burn off, helping keep the side cover, sprocket cover, and chain brake interior cleaner over a tank of fuel.
Semi-Synthetic Bar and Chain Oil is intended as a dedicated chainsaw bar oil. It is poured into the bar oil reservoir on the saw, which is a separate tank from the fuel tank on 2-stroke models and a separate bar oil tank on 4-stroke and electric chainsaws. The single year-round grade is built for residential, ranch, farm, professional logging, arborist, and homeowner cutting in a wide range of climates.
Soaking a new chain in Semi-Synthetic Bar and Chain Oil before installation pre-wets the pivot points and shortens the break-in period. The product is petroleum-based and is not a vegetable-based biodegradable bar oil. Sites that require a vegetable or readily biodegradable bar oil specification (some public forest service contracts and certain regional ordinances) should confirm the local rule before substitution. Aftermarket bar oil additives are not recommended.

Use a dedicated bar and chain oil that is tacky and built to cling to a fast-moving steel chain. Semi-Synthetic Bar and Chain Oil is a chainsaw bar oil formulated with a tackifier package and anti-wear additives intended for the bar oiler reservoir on a chainsaw, not for the gasoline fuel tank.
Motor oil is not designed as a chainsaw bar lubricant. Motor oil lacks the tackifier package that keeps bar oil on the chain at speed, so most of the lubricant is thrown off the cutters and very little reaches the bar groove and the drive links. Switching to a dedicated bar and chain oil reduces fling-off, slows wear on the bar and chain, and helps keep the chain cooler under load.
No. 2-stroke oil is mixed with gasoline at a ratio called out in the chainsaw owner manual (often 50:1 or 100:1) and goes into the fuel tank to lubricate the engine on a 2-stroke chainsaw. Bar and chain oil goes into a separate reservoir on the saw to lubricate the guide bar and chain.
