AMSOIL 5W-20 Synthetic-Blend Motor Oil

AMSOIL 5W-20 Synthetic-Blend Motor Oil (SB520) is a value-tier gasoline engine oil built for owners of late-model cars, SUVs, and light trucks that specify an SAE 5W-20 viscosity. The formulation features greater than 50 percent synthetic content combined with quality conventional base oils and an advanced additive package, and it meets API SP (Resource Conserving), SN Plus, and SN service categories with ILSAC GF-6A, GF-5, and GF-4 fuel-economy approvals. The product is intended for drivers who want an upgrade over conventional motor oil at a value price while still covering turbocharged and direct-injection engine hardware.

Boosted synthetic content for modern engine hardware

Greater than 50 percent synthetic content is the defining feature of Synthetic-Blend Motor Oil. The synthetic share raises thermal stability and oxidation resistance relative to conventional oils, which matters most under the higher cylinder pressures and bearing temperatures produced by turbochargers and gasoline direct injection. The formulation is licensed to API SP (Resource Conserving) and ILSAC GF-6A, the current specifications that include low-speed pre-ignition control, timing chain wear protection, and improved fuel economy testing for 5W-20 grades.

All-temperature protection

The blend of quality conventional base oils, premium synthetic base oils, and an advanced additive package keeps the oil stable across a wide range of ambient and operating temperatures. The formulation stands up to heat to control deposits, resist thickening, and limit oil consumption during summer driving and stop-and-go traffic. Cold-temperature fluidity supports easier cold starts and prompt lubrication of cams, lifters, and bearings at startup to reduce wear during the first seconds of engine operation.

Detergency and sludge control

A high dose of detergent and dispersant additives works with the boosted synthetic share to resist deposit formation, hold contaminants in suspension, and slow the development of varnish and sludge across the drain interval. Cleaner ring lands, piston crowns, and oil galleries help the engine maintain compression and oil flow, which is especially important on direct-injection engines that are sensitive to deposit buildup at the intake valves and ring pack.

Volatility resistance to reduce oil consumption

Motor oil volatility can drive top-up oil consumption, reduce fuel economy, and accelerate deposit formation as the lightest base oil fractions evaporate. Synthetic-Blend Motor Oil resists volatility to limit consumption and protect efficiency between oil changes. The 5W-20 grade carries a NOACK volatility specification of 12.5 percent maximum weight loss in the ASTM D5800 test, in line with the ceiling required by API SP and ILSAC GF-6A.

Wear and turbocharger protection

Modern 5W-20 service categories are written to handle the heat and shear of turbocharged direct-injection engines, including chain-wear protection and low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) limits required by API SP. Synthetic-Blend 5W-20 meets API SP (Resource Conserving), which includes the LSPI engine test required by the specification, along with Sequence IVB chain wear and Sequence X timing chain stretch limits. Robust anti-wear chemistry and a stable high-temperature, high-shear viscosity at 150 C (minimum 2.6 cP, ASTM D5481) keep a protective film between cam lobes, bearings, and ring pack under load.

Compatibility

Synthetic-Blend Motor Oil is compatible with other synthetic, synthetic-blend, and conventional motor oils, so a top-up with the wrong viscosity bottle in a pinch will not damage the engine. Mixing oils, however, will shorten the life expectancy of the formulation and reduce its performance benefits, so a complete drain and refill with one product is the right approach at the next service. Aftermarket oil additives are not recommended for use with this oil because they can disrupt the additive package balance.

Recommended applications and service intervals

The 5W-20 grade is built for gasoline engines that specify any of the following service categories or OEM approvals.

Drain intervals follow the schedule stated by the vehicle manufacturer or the indication from the vehicle oil-life monitoring system. The oil filter should be changed at every oil change, and oil level should be checked at regular fuel stops. Pair the change with an AMSOIL Oil Filter sized for the application. Confirm the right viscosity for the engine with the AMSOIL Vehicle Lookup Guide, and compare value, mid-tier, and premium AMSOIL gasoline oils in the AMSOIL Car Oil Guide.

  • First time using

my 06 liberty is starting to use/leak oil. Too expensive to use synthetic oil and have it disappear and keep replacing it. Thought I would try the Blend because its about the same price as oil from discount stores. This way I get to keep using AMSOIL.

  • AMSOIL USE

I HAVE BEEN A DEALER, AND HAVE USED AMSOIL FOR NEARLY 50 YEARS. I WOULDN'T USE ANY OTHER SYNTHETIC OIL. AL AMATUZIO STARTED THIS AND IT USED TO BE CALLED AMZOIL. THIS THE ONLY PRODUCT I USE IN ANY OF MY VEHICLES.

Frequently asked questions

What is synthetic-blend motor oil?

Synthetic-blend motor oil combines synthetic base oils with conventional base oils in one formulation. AMSOIL 5W-20 Synthetic-Blend Motor Oil uses greater than 50 percent synthetic content, which raises thermal stability and oxidation resistance compared with a conventional oil while keeping the price below a 100 percent synthetic product.

Is synthetic-blend better than conventional oil?

For a late-model engine that calls for an API SP or ILSAC GF-6A 5W-20, a synthetic-blend with more than 50 percent synthetic content offers stronger heat resistance, better volatility control, and improved cold-start flow than a pure conventional oil. Synthetic-Blend 5W-20 is the entry point into the AMSOIL gasoline lineup and a step up from conventional 5W-20 in protection and cleanliness.

Which vehicles use 5W-20 synthetic-blend motor oil?

SAE 5W-20 is a common factory fill for many Ford, Honda, Mazda, and Chrysler gasoline passenger cars and light trucks from the early 2000s through current model years, along with select Hyundai and Kia engines. Confirm the recommended viscosity and service category for a specific vehicle in the owner manual, or use the AMSOIL Vehicle Lookup Guide.

What specifications does AMSOIL 5W-20 Synthetic-Blend meet?

The 5W-20 grade meets API SP (Resource Conserving), SN Plus, and SN service categories, ILSAC GF-6A, GF-5, and GF-4, GM dexos1 Gen 3, Chrysler MS-6395, and Ford WSS-M2C960-A1. The owner manual should call out one of these categories or approvals before the oil is used.

How often should this oil be changed?

Synthetic-Blend Motor Oil is recommended for the drain interval stated by the vehicle manufacturer or indicated by the vehicle oil-life monitoring system. Replace the oil filter at every oil change. Drivers who want a longer drain interval than the OEM schedule should step up to AMSOIL XL or AMSOIL Signature Series in the same viscosity.

Can synthetic-blend be mixed with full synthetic or conventional oil?

Yes. The formulation is compatible with other synthetic, synthetic-blend, and conventional motor oils, so a top-up with a different oil in an emergency is acceptable. Mixing oils shortens the life expectancy of Synthetic-Blend Motor Oil and reduces its performance benefits, so a complete drain and refill with one product at the next service is the right approach.

Will using AMSOIL synthetic-blend void a new vehicle warranty?

No. Using AMSOIL synthetic lubricants does not void a new vehicle or equipment manufacturer warranty, and all AMSOIL lubricants and filters are covered by the AMSOIL Limited Warranty.
