AMSOIL 5W-30 100% Synthetic Small-Engine Oil is a commercial-grade, shear-stable formulation built for air-cooled four-stroke equipment that runs hot, dirty, and under sustained load. The 5W-30 grade fits snowblowers, generators, and pressure washers that call for SAE 30 or 5W-30, including engines from Briggs & Stratton, Honda, Kohler, Champion, Generac, Toro, Ariens, Troy Bilt, John Deere, MTD, and Husqvarna.
Engineered for the way small engines fail
Compared to liquid-cooled automotive engines, small engines run hotter, operate under constant load, suffer from neglected maintenance, and are exposed to dirt, rain, and snow. Many small-engine oils on the market are relabeled automotive oils formulated for fuel economy rather than durability. AMSOIL 5W-30 100% Synthetic Small-Engine Oil is engineered to solve the failure modes that shorten service life in air-cooled equipment: wear, power loss, oil consumption, carbon deposits, and stuck rings and valves.
High film strength for wear protection
The shear-stable, high-film-strength formulation is fortified with anti-wear additives. It does not thin out due to mechanical shear, ensuring a thick lubricating film that protects against metal-to-metal contact. In the Four-Ball Wear Test (ASTM D4172B at 40 kg, 75 degrees C, 1,200 rpm, one hour), the 5W-30 grade returned a 0.47 mm scar, supporting protection through long mowing, plowing, and pumping cycles.
Low oil consumption between top-offs
Heat-resistant synthetic base oils provide low volatility, strong viscosity stability, and oxidation resistance, which keeps the formulation in the sump and out of the combustion chamber. Noack volatility (ASTM D5800) for the 5W-30 grade is 7.9 percent weight loss. Based on 125-hour lab tests of small engines, AMSOIL 10W-30 Synthetic Small-Engine Oil reduced oil consumption 61 percent compared to three leading 10W-30/SAE 30 motor oils, supporting longer runs between top-offs and a lower risk of oil-starvation failure on equipment that goes unattended.
Carbon control and ring-pack cleanliness
Engine power is reduced by wear, carbon deposits, valve sticking, and piston-ring sticking. The detergent additive package fights carbon, varnish, and sludge and prevents ring and valve sticking, so engines produce maximum power throughout their service lives. In severe-service testing, the piston and rings of a Kawasaki FX 730 V engine were virtually free of deposits and wear after 500 hours on the formulation.
Cold-start flow and extreme-temperature performance
The saturated molecular structure and antioxidant additives provide outstanding resistance to extreme heat. In extreme cold, a viscosity index of 171 (ASTM D2270) and the absence of paraffin waxes keep the oil fluid. Cold-Crank Simulator viscosity (ASTM D5293) is 4,355 cP at -30 degrees C, with a pour point of -44 degrees C (-47 degrees F) (ASTM D97). That cold-flow profile supports easier starts in snowblowers and standby generators.
Industry specifications and warranty position
The formulation meets API SL, SJ, SH, and SG (Gasoline) and API CD and CF (Diesel) service categories. It contains no friction modifiers and meets JASO MA/MA2 wet-clutch standards to help prevent misapplication in shared-sump equipment. Use of AMSOIL synthetic lubricants does not void a new equipment manufacturer warranty, and the product is covered by the AMSOIL Limited Warranty.
Recommended applications and service intervals
The 5W-30 grade is the right viscosity for snowblowers, portable and standby generators, pressure washers, log splitters, and other four-stroke equipment that calls for SAE 30 or 5W-30 in the owner manual. It is also approved for off-road diesel applications that require API CD or CF and for certain transmissions, which is useful on equipment with a shared engine and transmission sump. Service-life targets in normal and severe service are listed below.
Service life up to 200 hours of operation or one year, whichever comes first, on equipment running the recommended viscosity.
Continued protection beyond the original equipment manufacturer drain interval when equipment goes longer between oil changes than the recommendation.
Not recommended for engines requiring SAE 10W-30, 10W-40, 15W-40, 15W-50, or other viscosity grades; choose the matching AMSOIL Synthetic Small-Engine Oil grade for those applications.
Outside the United States and Canada, confirm the local AMSOIL service-life position before extending intervals.
The formulation is compatible with other synthetic and conventional motor oils, but mixing shortens the life expectancy of the oil and reduces performance benefits, and extended drain intervals are not supported when oils are mixed. Aftermarket oil additives are not recommended with this product. Pair an oil change with a fresh OEM-equivalent or AMSOIL filter, and follow the equipment manufacturer recommendation for filter and air-filter replacement.

Confirm the right grade for a specific engine with the AMSOIL Vehicle Lookup Guide.
Can automotive 5W-30 be used in a lawn mower or snowblower?
Many small-engine oils on the market are relabeled automotive oils formulated for fuel economy rather than durability. AMSOIL 5W-30 100% Synthetic Small-Engine Oil is engineered specifically for air-cooled equipment that runs hotter and under more constant load than a passenger-car engine. For mowers, generators, and snowblowers that call for SAE 30 or 5W-30, the small-engine oil is the appropriate match.
How long does AMSOIL 5W-30 100% Synthetic Small-Engine Oil last in service?
Service life is up to 200 hours of operation or one year, whichever comes first, on equipment running the recommended viscosity. The long-life formulation has demonstrated the ability to safely exceed original equipment manufacturer drain intervals in severe service, providing an extra measure of protection when equipment goes longer between oil changes than the equipment manufacturer recommendation.
Is this oil JASO MA/MA2 rated for wet-clutch applications?
Yes. The formulation contains no friction modifiers and meets JASO MA/MA2 wet-clutch standards. That allows safe use in shared-sump equipment that lubricates a wet clutch or wet brake from the engine sump, and helps prevent misapplication on machines that would slip on a friction-modified automotive oil.
How does the formulation reduce oil consumption?
Heat-resistant synthetic base oils give the formulation low volatility, strong viscosity stability, and oxidation resistance, with Noack volatility of 7.9 percent weight loss (ASTM D5800) for the 5W-30 grade. Based on 125-hour lab tests of small engines, AMSOIL 10W-30 Synthetic Small-Engine Oil reduced oil consumption 61 percent compared to three leading 10W-30/SAE 30 motor oils, supporting fewer top-offs and a lower risk of oil starvation.
Can AMSOIL 5W-30 100% Synthetic Small-Engine Oil be mixed with conventional oil?
The formulation is compatible with other synthetic and conventional motor oils, but mixing shortens the life expectancy of the oil and reduces the performance benefits, and the 200-hour service life is not supported when oils have been mixed. Aftermarket oil additives are not recommended with this product. For full service life, drain and refill with the same product.
Does using AMSOIL synthetic lubricants void an equipment warranty?
No. Using AMSOIL synthetic lubricants does not void a new equipment manufacturer warranty, and AMSOIL 5W-30 100% Synthetic Small-Engine Oil is covered by the AMSOIL Limited Warranty. For application questions and grade selection by mower, generator, snowblower, or pressure washer model, the Lawn Mower Oil Questions guide answers the most common application match and interval cases.
