AMSOIL Extended-Life 5W-20 100% Synthetic Motor Oil
AMSOIL Extended-Life 5W-20 100% Synthetic Motor Oil is a fully synthetic gasoline engine oil engineered for the boosted-protection middle tier of the AMSOIL motor oil lineup. The 5W-20 grade meets API SP (Resource Conserving), API SN Plus, ILSAC GF-6A, GM dexos1 Gen 3, ACEA A1/B1, Chrysler MS-6395, and the Ford WSS-M2C945-A and WSS-M2C930-A specifications, with extended drain coverage up to 20,000 miles or one year in normal service. Extended-Life 5W-20 is built for road warriors, fleet operators, and daily drivers who want long oil life without stepping up to the Signature Series 25,000-mile interval.
Resists oil breakdown across long drain intervals
High-temperature operation is the primary driver of viscosity increase, deposit formation, and accelerated wear in modern gasoline engines. Extended-Life 5W-20 holds its in-grade viscosity through extended thermal exposure, posting a kinematic viscosity of 8.7 cSt at 100 C in ASTM D445 and a viscosity index of 155 in ASTM D2270. The formula is built on advanced synthetic base stocks and a boosted additive package that resists thinning and thickening, helping limit oil consumption, deposit buildup, and the cold-start trouble that comes from a degraded oil film.
LSPI defense for turbocharged direct-injection engines
Low-speed pre-ignition is the spontaneous ignition of the fuel and air mixture before the spark fires, and it is most damaging in turbocharged gasoline direct-injection designs that dominate late-model passenger cars. Extended-Life 5W-20 carries detergent and dispersant chemistry tuned to defend against the event, qualifying under the LSPI engine test that is part of the GM dexos1 Gen 3, API SP, and ILSAC GF-6A service categories. That coverage matters in modern downsized engines where a single LSPI event can shatter a piston ring land or bend a connecting rod.
Detergency and acid neutralization
Long drain intervals only work if the oil keeps internal surfaces clean and stays alkaline as combustion acids accumulate. Extended-Life 5W-20 is fortified with detergent and dispersant additives and a boosted base reserve that delivers a Total Base Number of 10.7 in ASTM D2896. The result is 37 percent more cleaning power than AMSOIL OE Synthetic Motor Oil, leaving piston ring lands, valve decks, and the oil pick-up screen better protected against sludge, varnish, and carbon over a full extended-drain cycle.
Cold-start flow and high-temperature shear control
Cold cranking viscosity controls how quickly oil reaches bearings and cam surfaces during a winter start. Extended-Life 5W-20 posts a CCS viscosity of 5,242 cP at -30 C in ASTM D5293 and a pour point of -42 C in ASTM D97, allowing fast circulation in cold weather. At the other end of the temperature window, a high-temperature high-shear viscosity of 2.9 cP at 150 C in ASTM D5481 keeps a load-bearing oil film between bearings and cam lobes during sustained highway pulls, towing, and hot-soak conditions.
Volatility control and oil-consumption protection
Lighter oils tend to volatilize off the ring land in a hot engine, which raises consumption and contributes to deposits. Extended-Life 5W-20 holds NOACK volatility to 8.4 percent weight loss in ASTM D5800, well below the 15 percent ceiling that ILSAC GF-6A allows. Lower volatility helps maintain the right oil charge between top-offs and reduces the volume of light fractions that can bake onto pistons and valves over a 20,000-mile interval.
Recommended applications and service intervals
Extended-Life 5W-20 is built for gasoline engines that call for any of the following specifications: API SP (Resource Conserving), API SN Plus, ILSAC GF-6A, GM dexos1 Gen 3, ACEA A1/B1, Chrysler MS-6395, Ford WSS-M2C945-A, and Ford WSS-M2C930-A. The grade is intended for late-model passenger cars and light trucks that specifically require an SAE 5W-20 viscosity in the United States and Canada market.
Normal service: up to 20,000 miles (32,000 km) or one year, whichever comes first, in personal vehicles not under severe service.
Severe service: up to 12,000 miles (19,300 km) or one year, whichever comes first. Severe conditions include commercial and fleet duty, excessive idling, frequent towing, hauling, plowing, or driving in dusty environments.
Modified engines, racing vehicles, and engines running alternative fuels such as E85, CNG, or propane are excluded from extended drain recommendations.
Outside the United States and Canada, follow the vehicle manufacturer's recommended drain interval.
AMSOIL Oil Filters are designed for extended drain intervals. With other-brand filters the interval should not exceed 12,000 miles (19,300 km) or one year unless the vehicle manufacturer recommends a longer interval, and the filter should always be changed when the oil is changed. Extended-Life 5W-20 is compatible with conventional and other synthetic motor oils, but mixing shortens oil life and reduces performance benefits, and extended drain intervals are not supported when oils have been mixed. Aftermarket oil additives are not recommended for use with AMSOIL Extended-Life Synthetic Motor Oil.

Simply the best.
This is only for the people who are planning to use Amsoil for the first time. The people who used it before don’t need to read any reviews.. they know it. This is the best oil by far and it does exactly as the company says. I am using Amsoil for 20 years now on all my cars and never ever had any issues changing my oil every 10 or 25 k miles as recommended.

Show me any better
I am using only Amsoil oil for the last 20 years and don’t know (or care) if there is anything better or even close to be equal to it.
Is AMSOIL Extended-Life 5W-20 a true full synthetic?
Yes. Extended-Life 5W-20 is a 100 percent synthetic gasoline engine oil. The formula combines advanced synthetic base oils with a boosted detergent, dispersant, and base-number additive system that is built to stay stable across extended drain periods.
Which industry specifications does Extended-Life 5W-20 meet?
Extended-Life 5W-20 meets API SP (Resource Conserving), API SN Plus, ILSAC GF-6A, GM dexos1 Gen 3 (which supersedes dexos1 Gen 2 and 6094M), ACEA A1/B1, Chrysler MS-6395, Ford WSS-M2C945-A, and Ford WSS-M2C930-A. The owner manual should list one of these service categories or OEM approvals before the oil is used.
How long can Extended-Life 5W-20 stay in service?
Extended-Life 5W-20 supports drain intervals up to 20,000 miles (32,000 km) or one year, whichever comes first, in personal vehicles operating in normal service inside the United States and Canada. Severe service is capped at 12,000 miles (19,300 km) or one year. AMSOIL Oil Filters are recommended to take full advantage of the extended interval.
What is the difference between AMSOIL Extended-Life and Signature Series 5W-20?
Both are 100 percent synthetic, but the families are positioned differently. Extended-Life sits in the middle tier with up to 20,000-mile drain coverage and a boosted additive package over AMSOIL OE Synthetic Motor Oil. Signature Series sits at the top with up to 25,000-mile drain coverage and a higher-density additive system. Drivers who want the longest drain interval and the deepest performance reserve should consider Signature Series; drivers who want extended protection at a lower investment should consider Extended-Life.
Can 5W-30 be substituted in an engine that calls for 5W-20?
Substituting a 5W-30 in an engine that calls for 5W-20 is not recommended. Extended-Life 5W-20 is built for engines that specifically require an SAE 5W-20 viscosity and the API SP, API SN Plus, ILSAC GF-6A, or matching OEM specifications listed above. Use the AMSOIL Vehicle Lookup Guide to confirm the correct viscosity for the vehicle.
Does Extended-Life 5W-20 protect turbocharged direct-injection engines?
Yes. Extended-Life 5W-20 carries the LSPI-defending detergent system required by GM dexos1 Gen 3, API SP, and ILSAC GF-6A, all of which include the LSPI engine test. The 2.9 cP high-temperature high-shear viscosity in ASTM D5481 also helps maintain a load-bearing film at the turbo bearing under hot-soak conditions.
Will using Extended-Life 5W-20 void a new vehicle warranty?
No. Using AMSOIL synthetic lubricants does not void a new vehicle or equipment manufacturer warranty, and all AMSOIL lubricants and filters are covered by the AMSOIL Limited Warranty.
