Z-ROD 10W-30 is a 100% synthetic motor oil engineered for classic cars, hot rods, muscle cars, and other high-performance street vehicles. The 10W-30 viscosity grade is built around a high-zinc, high-phosphorus additive package that pairs flat-tappet wear protection with rust and corrosion inhibitors for engines that get driven hard, then sit between drives.
High-zinc ZDDP package for flat-tappet camshafts
Flat-tappet cam lobes and lifters slide rapidly against one another, producing high friction and heat that can wear down the cam, alter valve operation, and lead to lost power and reduced efficiency. These contact points are splash-lubricated rather than pressure-fed, which puts extra strain on anti-wear additives such as the zinc and phosphorus in zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP). Z-ROD 10W-30 is formulated with high levels of ZDDP to protect flat-tappet cams, lifters, rockers and other wear-prone components common to vintage V8s and performance rebuilds.
The high-zinc, high-phosphorus chemistry also fights wear that can erode ring and cylinder seal, supporting compression and horsepower. ZDDP levels exceed the limits of API SM and newer specifications, which is why this formula is reserved for engines that call for API SL or earlier.
Long-term rust and corrosion protection during storage
Classic and collector engines often spend more time in the garage than on the road. Humid storage attacks bare metal inside the engine and can leave pitting on cam lobes, lifters and cylinder walls long before the next start-up. Z-ROD 10W-30 carries a proprietary blend of rust and corrosion inhibitors designed to coat internal components and shed moisture during extended downtime.
The formulation was submitted to the Standard Test Method for Rust Protection by Metal Preservatives in the Humidity Cabinet (ASTM D1748-10), which evaluates rust-preventive properties of an oil under high-humidity conditions similar to those a covered hot rod faces in a damp garage. The metal coupon treated with Z-ROD Synthetic Motor Oil showed no signs of rust. In the same in-house testing of Z-ROD 10W-40 against a leading competitor (7/25/2019, ASTM D1748-10), Z-ROD completely prevented rust formation while the competing oil did not.
Synthetic base oils for heat, deposits and viscosity stability
Hot rods, muscle cars and modified street engines often run higher cylinder pressures and temperatures than the factory planned for. Synthetic base stocks resist thermal and oxidative breakdown that produces sludge and varnish, with a NOACK volatility of 5.5 percent weight loss (ASTM D5800) and a viscosity index of 154 (ASTM D2270) for a stable film from cold cranks to hard pulls.
Cold-start flow and high-temperature film strength
The 10W winter rating gives the oil a pour point of -42 degrees C / -44 degrees F (ASTM D97), moving to the top end quickly on a cool morning before the first valve event. At operating temperature, kinematic viscosity at 100 degrees C measures 12 cSt (ASTM D445) and high-temperature/high-shear viscosity at 150 degrees C is 3.2 cP (ASTM D5481), keeping a load-bearing film between cam lobes, lifters, bearings, and rings under sustained heat.
Recommended applications and service intervals

Because engines in classic cars, hot rods and other performance vehicles are generally modified, a universal drain interval cannot be given and final responsibility for the drain interval rests with the owner. Pair Z-ROD 10W-30 with an AMSOIL oil filter at every change. The formula is compatible with conventional and other synthetic motor oils, but mixing shortens oil life and reduces performance benefits, and aftermarket oil additives are not recommended.

after getting a new mower I decided to do things a bit different. I used a break-in oil for the first 10 hours and then switch to the Z-Rod oil. mower engines use a flat tappet cam, so this is going to help it live. I've read several stories that some engines have issue with the cams failing, heard that before. So, this is my attempt to get this thing to live a long life, because nothing is getting cheaper, just made cheaper.

Excellent product
I switched from Dominator to Z-Rod to get the added moisture protection since moving to SC. SC is humid and the car sits for long periods. Z-Rod provides all the protection of Dominater for my 800+ RWHP engine both running and sitting.

What motor oil is high in zinc, and why does it matter for classic cars?
A high-zinc oil carries elevated levels of zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP), an anti-wear additive that protects metal-on-metal contact at flat-tappet cam lobes, lifters, and rocker arms. Modern API SP, SN PLUS and SN motor oils cap ZDDP to protect catalysts, which is fine for roller-cam engines but leaves vintage flat-tappet engines short on protection. Z-ROD 10W-30 is formulated above API SM limits to deliver the zinc and phosphorus those older valvetrains were designed to receive.
Is Z-ROD 10W-30 the right viscosity for a typical small-block V8?
Z-ROD 10W-30 fits engines that originally specified 10W-30, 10W-40 or 20W-50 motor oil and an API SL or earlier service category. That covers a large share of pre-1990s small-block V8s, big-block muscle, and performance straight-sixes that have not been re-engineered for modern thin-grade oils.
