AMSOIL Z-ROD 20W-50 100% Synthetic Motor Oil

AMSOIL Z-ROD 20W-50 100% Synthetic Motor Oil is the heaviest grade in the Z-ROD lineup, formulated for classic cars, hot rods, muscle cars, and high-performance V8s that call for a 20W-50 viscosity and an API SL or earlier service category. The high-zinc, high-phosphorus chemistry targets flat-tappet camshaft wear, while a dedicated rust and corrosion package keeps internal surfaces protected through long off-season storage.

High-ZDDP wear protection for flat-tappet cams

Lifters and cam lobes on flat-tappet camshafts slide rapidly against one another, producing high friction and heat that can wear the cam, alter valve timing, and rob horsepower. Those contact zones are splash-lubricated rather than pressure-fed, so anti-wear chemistry has to work harder. Z-ROD 20W-50 is formulated with high levels of zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP), the zinc and phosphorus pair that flat-tappet engines depend on for boundary protection.

ZDDP levels in Z-ROD exceed the limits of API SM and newer specifications, which were tightened to protect modern catalytic converters at the expense of zinc content. In Four-Ball Wear testing per ASTM D4172 at 40 kgf, 75 degrees C and 1,200 rpm for one hour, Z-ROD 20W-50 produced a wear scar of 0.34 mm, evidence that the additive system holds up under sustained sliding contact.

Long-term rust and corrosion protection

Classic cars rarely rack up daily miles. They sit in damp garages and trailers for weeks or months, which is exactly when condensation and acidic blowby attack bearings, cylinder walls, and cam lobes. Z-ROD 20W-50 is built with a unique blend of rust and corrosion inhibitors aimed at the off-season.

That chemistry was validated in the Standard Test Method for Rust Protection by Metal Preservatives in the Humidity Cabinet (ASTM D1748-10), the same procedure used to evaluate dedicated metal preservatives. A coupon treated with Z-ROD showed no signs of rust under high-humidity conditions, while a leading competitor product did not prevent rust formation in the same in-house comparison conducted on July 25, 2019.

Heavy 20W-50 grade for hotter operating temperatures

The 20W-50 grade is the right choice when an owner manual calls for a 20W-50, when summer temperatures climb, or when a built engine runs hotter than a stock combination. Z-ROD 20W-50 carries a kinematic viscosity of 19.5 cSt at 100 degrees C and 152.6 cSt at 40 degrees C (ASTM D445), with a viscosity index of 147 (ASTM D2270). That combination keeps a thick hydrodynamic film at peak load and still flows during warm-up.

High-Temperature/High-Shear viscosity at 150 degrees C reaches 5.7 cP (ASTM D5481), which protects bearings and cam-to-lifter contact during hard pulls and steady highway cruising in big-bore V8s. The flash point is 244 degrees C (471 degrees F) and the fire point is 260 degrees C (500 degrees F) per ASTM D92, headroom that suits performance applications.

Synthetic stability with low volatility

A 20W-50 grade traditionally relies on heavy base stocks that can boil off during sustained heat, raising consumption between drains. Z-ROD 20W-50 is built on a 100 percent synthetic base, which limits Noack Volatility to 3.0 percent weight loss in the ASTM D5800 evaporative test. Lower evaporation means less topping off, fewer deposits on hot components and a more consistent viscosity over the life of the charge. The pour point is -36 degrees C (-33 degrees F) per ASTM D97, so the formula still pumps in cool spring mornings after winter storage.

Detergency and seal compatibility for older engines

Older engines often see varied fuel quality, occasional ethanol blends and longer idle time at car shows, all of which load the oil with acids and combustion byproducts. Z-ROD 20W-50 carries a Total Base Number of 9.0 (ASTM D2896) to neutralize those acids and resist sludge between drains. The formula is safe for automotive seals and is compatible with conventional and other synthetic motor oils, so a switchover does not require a flush.

    after getting a new mower I decided to do things a bit different. I used a break-in oil for the first 10 hours and then switch to the Z-Rod oil. mower engines use a flat tappet cam, so this is going to help it live. I've read several stories that some engines have issue with the cams failing, heard that before. So, this is my attempt to get this thing to live a long life, because nothing is getting cheaper, just made cheaper.
