AMSOIL SAE 60 100% Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil

AMSOIL SAE 60 100% Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil (MCS) is the heaviest viscosity in the AMSOIL V-twin lineup, formulated for big-bore motorcycles that call for an SAE 60 grade in the engine sump or three-sump bikes that share oil across engine, transmission, and chaincase. The straight-grade synthetic targets hot-climate riding, sustained two-up touring, parade and stop-and-go traffic, and early-model Harley-Davidson V-twins fitted with Knucklehead, Panhead, or Shovelhead engines.

Hot-temperature film strength for big-bore V-twins

Big-bore V-twins generate sustained heat under load, and the oil has to hold a strong lubricating film at elevated temperatures to limit wear in cams, lifters, and rocker assemblies. AMSOIL SAE 60 Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil is built on naturally heat-resistant synthetic base oils with a heavy treatment of anti-wear additives that limit metal-to-metal contact when oil temperatures climb. The Four-Ball Wear Test (ASTM D4172, 40 kgf, 150 degrees C, 1,800 rpm, 1 hour) returned a 0.37 mm scar diameter, and the formulation delivers a high-temperature/high-shear viscosity of 7.6 cP at 150 degrees C (ASTM D5481), which keeps a thick hydrodynamic film in place under hot, loaded operation.

Withstands extreme heat in stop-and-go and parade traffic

Hot summer weather, slow parade traffic, and back-to-back rally riding push V-twin engine oil into a regime where lighter and conventional motorcycle oils oxidize and thicken. The synthetic base stock package in this oil resists oxidation and viscosity drift, with a NOACK volatility of 3.7 percent weight loss (ASTM D5800) that helps cap evaporative thickening across hot service. Naturally heat-resistant synthetic base oils combined with maximum levels of oxidation inhibitors limit sludge and varnish buildup so the engine stays clean and runs efficiently through the riding season.

Wet-clutch friction control without friction modifiers

Wet-clutch motorcycles need a JASO MA-rated motorcycle oil, not a passenger-car formulation that contains modern friction modifiers. AMSOIL SAE 60 Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil contains no friction modifiers and meets JASO MA/MA-2, supporting smooth shifts and positive clutch engagement at the lever. A high TBN reserve helps preserve clutch life by resisting acids that can degrade clutch friction material across the service interval, and the oil controls heat at the clutch pack to limit slippage and glazing under aggressive launches.

Rust protection for stored and short-trip motorcycles

Stored bikes and short-trip riders see internal rust because moisture never bakes out of the engine oil. Standing humidity drives roller-bearing failure, wear, compression loss, and blow-by. AMSOIL SAE 60 Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil contains specific anti-rust agents engineered into the additive package rather than leaning on a base oil that does not naturally protect ferrous surfaces. That combination matters most for owners who park their motorcycles for the off-season or take frequent short rides without warming the oil to full operating temperature.

One lubricant for engine, transmission, and chaincase

For owners who prefer to stock a single bottle for engine, transmission, and chaincase service, the shear-stable formulation performs like a gear lubricant without the negative effects of extreme-pressure additives, which gives one oil the working range to cover the engine sump and the geared compartments on three-sump V-twins. The product is also recommended where an SAE 90 API GL-1 gear oil is specified, which extends its use into the gear-lubricant role on motorcycles that call for a straight-grade gear oil rather than a multi-grade engine oil.

Recommended applications and service intervals

Use in big-bore motorcycles that require an SAE 60 motorcycle oil and any of the specifications listed below, including early-model Harley-Davidsons fitted with Knucklehead, Panhead, or Shovelhead engines. The oil is also recommended where an SAE 90 API GL-1 gear oil is required. Specifications met include JASO MA/MA-2, API SL, API SG, API CF, API CG-4, and ISO-L-EMA2.

Pair MCS with an AMSOIL Motorcycle Oil Filter to support extended drain intervals. When a non-AMSOIL filter is fitted, change the filter at the standard interval. The oil is compatible with other synthetic and conventional motor oils, but mixing shortens service life and reduces performance benefits, so extended drain intervals are not supported on mixed oil. Aftermarket oil additives are not recommended for use with AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oil.

Frequently asked questions

Why choose SAE 60 over a 20W-50 V-twin motorcycle oil?

An SAE 60 grade is heavier than a 20W-50 across the operating temperature range, which keeps a thicker oil film in place when engine oil temperatures climb in hot weather, parade traffic, and sustained two-up touring. Big-bore motorcycles whose owner manuals call for an SAE 60 motorcycle oil should run an SAE 60 grade. Bikes whose manuals call for a 20W-50 should not be switched to a heavier grade unless the motorcycle manufacturer permits the change for hot-climate or sustained-load service.

Is AMSOIL SAE 60 V-Twin Motorcycle Oil approved for Harley-Davidson?

The product is recommended in big-bore V-twins that require an SAE 60 motorcycle oil, including early-model Harley-Davidsons fitted with Knucklehead, Panhead, or Shovelhead engines. The oil is Warranty Secure and is backed by the AMSOIL Limited Warranty. Harley-Davidson is not affiliated with AMSOIL, and trademarked Harley-Davidson model names remain the property of their respective owner.

Will using a synthetic motorcycle oil void the factory warranty?

No. Using AMSOIL synthetic lubricants does not void a factory warranty. AMSOIL SAE 60 Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil is Warranty Secure and is backed by the AMSOIL Limited Warranty when used in motorcycles that specify an SAE 60 motorcycle oil and the listed specifications.

Is the oil JASO MA/MA-2 wet-clutch compatible?

Yes. The oil meets JASO MA and JASO MA-2 and contains no friction modifiers, which supports smooth shifting and positive wet-clutch engagement on motorcycles with shared sump or shared engine and transmission lubrication. Specifications also met include API SL, API SG, API CF, API CG-4, and ISO-L-EMA2.

Can it be run in the engine, transmission, and chaincase on a Big Twin?

Yes. The shear-stable formulation performs like a gear lube without the negative effects of extreme-pressure additives, and the product delivers the convenience of one lubricant for all three sumps on V-twin motorcycles that share oil between compartments. On Big Twin Harley-Davidson transmissions, follow the Harley-Davidson recommended drain interval for synthetic oil of up to 20,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.

How long can the oil go between changes in the engine?

For engines and transmissions in normal road service, the recommendation is up to twice the motorcycle manufacturer change interval (miles, hours, or one year, whichever comes first). Off-road riding follows the motorcycle manufacturer's standard recommended interval. Racing and modified engines are excluded from the extended-drain-interval recommendation, with oil change frequency at the owner's discretion.

Is it suitable for racing or modified V-twin engines?

Racing and modified engines are excluded from the extended-drain-interval recommendations for AMSOIL SAE 60 Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil. Oil change frequency in racing and modified service is at the owner's discretion. The Big Twin Harley-Davidson transmission cap of 20,000 miles or one year still applies to the gearbox on stock big-bore V-twins used in normal road service.
