AMSOIL 100% Synthetic V-Twin Primary Fluid

AMSOIL 100% Synthetic V-Twin Primary Fluid (MVP) is the popular synthetic primary chaincase lubricant for Harley-Davidson Big Twin and Sportster models, Triumph V-twins, and pre-2013 Indian motorcycles that use a separate primary compartment for the clutch, primary chain, and compensator. The formulation is balanced for wet-clutch friction, gear and chain wear, and the aluminum and steel surfaces inside the primary, which is a different chemistry job from engine oil or transmission fluid.

Dedicated primary chaincase chemistry

On a Harley-Davidson Big Twin or Sportster, the primary case is a sealed chamber separate from the engine sump and the transmission. It runs a wet clutch, a primary chain, the compensator, and aluminum housings. AMSOIL Synthetic V-Twin Primary Fluid is purpose-built for that environment, which is why it is sold as a dedicated chaincase product rather than a multi-sump engine oil. Owners who prefer to run a single 20W-50 across all three sumps can do that with a separate AMSOIL V-Twin motorcycle oil, but a dedicated primary fluid is the configuration most factory service manuals were written around.

Consistent clutch feel and slip control

The fluid is formulated with a balanced additive system designed to deliver consistent clutch performance. It supports easy neutral selection, smooth acceleration in stop-and-go traffic and on the highway, and load-holding capacity that helps prevent clutch slip during confident takeoffs. Because the formula contains no passenger-car friction modifiers, the wet clutch sees the friction profile it was engineered for, not the slick surface that ATF or modern car engine oils can leave on clutch plates.

JASO MA/MA-2 wet-clutch friction performance

Wet-clutch friction is the single most common reason a primary or engine fluid that looks the same on the shelf causes problems in V-twins. AMSOIL Synthetic V-Twin Primary Fluid is rated MA/MA2, Pass on the JASO T 904 friction test, the standard motorcycle clutch-friction qualification. That rating is the technical reason the fluid can sit between the steel and friction plates of a Big Twin or Sportster primary without producing the slip, drag, or shudder associated with non-motorcycle lubricants.

Anti-wear protection for chain, compensator, and gears

Primary loads are not gentle. Heavy spring pressure, shock loading from engagement and deceleration, and continuous chain articulation work the additive package hard. AMSOIL Synthetic V-Twin Primary Fluid carries a heavy treatment of anti-wear additives to protect the gears, primary chain, and compensator bearing, with film strength that resists shock loading at the clutch hub. Four-Ball Wear Test results (ASTM D4172, 40 kgf, 150 degrees C, 1800 rpm, 1 hour) measure a 0.37 mm scar diameter, which quantifies the protection the additive package provides at gear-mesh and chain-pin contact points.

Thermal stability and cold-temperature flow

Big-twin primaries run hot in slow summer parades and stop-and-go traffic, then sit cold for winter storage. The thermally stable synthetic base oils resist oxidation and the deposits that thermal breakdown can drop onto clutch plates and chain links. At the cold end, the formulation reduces energy lost to drag in cold-start conditions and supports smooth shifts at startup. A pour point of -35 degrees C (-31 degrees F) and a flash point of 238 degrees C (460 degrees F) define the operating window in the typical technical properties table below.

Recommended applications and service intervals

AMSOIL 100% Synthetic V-Twin Primary Fluid is recommended for the primary chaincase in Harley-Davidson, Triumph, and pre-2013 Indian motorcycles that call for a dedicated primary chaincase fluid. The product is not an engine oil and is not a transmission fluid for those bikes; the engine and transmission sumps need their own designated lubricants. For fit by bike, use the AMSOIL vehicle lookup guide.

The fluid is compatible with other synthetic and conventional primary fluids, but mixing shortens service life and reduces performance benefits, so the 10,000 mile or one year service interval applies only when the primary is filled with MVP. Aftermarket clutch additives are not recommended for use with this fluid; the friction profile is already calibrated to the JASO MA/MA-2 wet-clutch standard, and additional friction modifiers can disturb engagement and cause slip.

Changed the HD heavy fluid to Amsoil V-Twin Primary Fluid. The shifting seems to be much better now. Transmission fluid changed at the same time. transmission was hanging up before. Now is smoothed out.

Frequently asked questions

What is V-twin primary fluid and why is it different from engine oil?

The primary chaincase on a Harley-Davidson Big Twin or Sportster is a sealed compartment separate from the engine and the transmission. It houses the clutch, primary chain, and compensator. Primary fluid is balanced for wet-clutch friction control plus chain and gear wear, while engine oil is balanced for combustion deposits, ring sealing, and bearing protection. Running the wrong fluid in the primary can produce clutch slip, drag, or accelerated chain wear.

Will AMSOIL primary fluid work in a Harley-Davidson Big Twin or Sportster?

Yes. AMSOIL 100% Synthetic V-Twin Primary Fluid is recommended for the primary chaincase in Harley-Davidson Big Twin and Sportster motorcycles, plus Triumph and pre-2013 Indian models that use a dedicated primary chamber. Confirm the fluid type required for a specific year and model in the service manual or the AMSOIL vehicle lookup guide.

Will using a synthetic primary fluid void the factory warranty?

No. Using AMSOIL synthetic lubricants does not void a factory warranty. AMSOIL 100% Synthetic V-Twin Primary Fluid is Warranty Secure and is backed by the AMSOIL Limited Warranty (G1363) when used in motorcycle primary chaincases as directed. Harley-Davidson, Triumph, and Indian are not affiliated with AMSOIL.

Is the fluid JASO MA/MA-2 wet-clutch compatible?

Yes. The fluid is rated MA/MA2, Pass on the JASO T 904 friction test, which is the wet-clutch friction standard for motorcycle lubricants. It contains no passenger-car friction modifiers that can cause clutch slip in a wet-plate primary.

How often does primary chaincase fluid need to be changed?

The recommendation is up to 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or one year in the primary chaincase, whichever comes first. Storage-heavy and short-trip duty cycles should follow the one-year cap to clear moisture and any shear-degraded fluid before the next riding season.

Can MVP be mixed with the primary fluid that was already in the chaincase?

The fluid is compatible with other synthetic and conventional primary fluids, but mixing shortens service life and reduces performance benefits. The 10,000 mile or one year service interval is only supported when the primary is filled with AMSOIL 100% Synthetic V-Twin Primary Fluid. Aftermarket clutch additives are not recommended.

What sizes does V-Twin Primary Fluid come in?

Available sizes are the quart bottle (MVPQT-EA) and the case of 12 quarts (MVPQT-CA). Most Harley-Davidson Big Twin primary chaincases hold roughly one quart, so a single bottle covers a typical service. Confirm the exact primary fill capacity for a specific year and model in the factory service manual.
