AMSOIL DOMINATOR 20W-50 Competition Diesel Oil

AMSOIL DOMINATOR 20W-50 Competition Diesel Oil is a 100 percent synthetic, race-only viscosity grade engineered for high-horsepower, turbocharged competition diesel engines. The 20W-50 chemistry targets sled-pull trucks, drag-race diesels, dyno-tuned Cummins, Power Stroke, and Duramax race builds, and any heavily modified engine where peak cylinder pressure, fuel dilution, and turbo heat would shear a stock 15W-40 down toward the bearing.

Bearing protection at high cylinder pressure

Race-built diesels run aggressive timing, large injectors, big-air turbos, and dual-fuel setups that drive cylinder pressure and main-bearing load far beyond stock targets. DCO delivers 50 percent more film thickness, based on a high-temperature high-shear viscosity of 5.5 cP measured per ASTM D5481, compared with the 3.5 cP HTHS limit defined for SAE 15W-40. The thicker hydrodynamic film keeps a load-carrying barrier between the crankshaft journals, rod bearings, and main bearings during peak cylinder events, so the bottom end stays separated when boost spikes, exhaust gas temperatures climb, and shock loading hits the rotating assembly.

Wear protection from a heavy zinc and phosphorus package

Power adders shear oil and push valvetrain, cam, and ring-belt contacts harder into boundary lubrication. DOMINATOR 20W-50 Competition Diesel Oil is heavily fortified with zinc and phosphorus anti-wear additives that lay down a sacrificial tribofilm at metal-to-metal contact points, blunting scuffing and adhesive wear in severe conditions. That additive concentration is dialed for race-only use rather than for the catalyst-protection limits that govern modern street diesel oils.

Viscosity stability under fuel dilution

High-horsepower diesel engines push a lot of fuel through the cylinder, and unburned fuel finds its way into the crankcase. Fuel dilution drops in-service viscosity, which compromises the lubrication of bearings, rings, and pin bushings and accelerates wear. The robust 20W-50 base oil and viscosity-modifier system are formulated to offset that thinning, preserving a protective film for longer between events.

Turbocharger protection at extreme temperatures

Race turbos, compound setups, and large single chargers spin bearing housings at temperatures and shaft speeds that punish ordinary diesel oil, leading to reduced performance or catastrophic failure over time. DOMINATOR 20W-50 Competition Diesel Oil pairs an extremely durable synthetic 20W-50 base with maximum levels of oxidation-inhibitor additives, resisting harmful oxidation and providing exceptional resistance to deposit formation in the turbo bearing area so the cartridge stays clean and clearances hold after repeated heat cycles.

Heavy-duty diesel additive backbone

The race-grade chemistry is layered onto a heavy-duty diesel additive backbone for the dispersancy, alkalinity reserve, and oxidation control that diesel race engines need without giving up the high-shear film strength described above. Recommended applications and service intervals

DCO is engineered for performance-modified diesel engines that require any of the following heavy-duty service categories or OEM approvals:

Service life in competition use is event-based rather than mileage-based: DOMINATOR 20W-50 Competition Diesel Oil provides lasting protection across multiple events, and oil analysis is the right tool for setting a competition drain interval. The formula is compatible with other conventional and synthetic engine oils, but mixing AMSOIL diesel oils with other oils shortens the oil's life expectancy and reduces the performance benefits, and extended drain intervals are not supported when oils have been mixed. Aftermarket oil additives are not recommended for use with AMSOIL synthetic diesel oils. Pair DCO with a high-efficiency full-flow oil filter, and consider adding bypass filtration for race programs that put long heat soak on the lubricant between events.

Customer reviews

  • A soul dominator

Love the oil just wish the price was better. Maybe offer in larger quantity

  • The best oil I have ever ran in my LMM

Towing, Hauling, Daily Driving, etc etc. I have a very high milage LMM and this oil holds its viscosity like no other in the summertime extreme temps. I have zero issues staying with this oil in the winter months as well. I highly recommend.

  • Very good oil

Thus stuff is amazing , I use it in my pulling truck (cummins) and it has never failed me !

Frequently asked questions

Is DOMINATOR 20W-50 a street or daily-driver diesel oil?

DCO is a competition-only chemistry for race-modified diesel engines, not a daily-driver replacement for the OEM-recommended 5W-40 or 15W-40. For street trucks, the right choice is a heavy-duty Signature Series Max-Duty diesel oil in the OEM viscosity and approval set. Compare grades in the AMSOIL Diesel Oil Guide.

Why run a 20W-50 in a diesel engine?

Race-built diesels generate cylinder pressures and bearing loads that quickly thin a 15W-40 below its design HTHS film. A 20W-50 with an HTHS of 5.5 cP per ASTM D5481 keeps more measured film between bearings and journals at peak load. The thicker grade also helps offset the in-service viscosity loss that comes with fuel dilution in heavily fueled race engines.

Will it work in a sled-pull, drag-race, or compound-turbo Cummins, Power Stroke, or Duramax?

That is exactly the design target. DCO was developed for high-horsepower, turbocharged competition diesel engines used in sled pulls, drag races, and dyno challenges, including race-built Cummins, Power Stroke, and Duramax platforms with large turbos, compound setups, or dual-fuel configurations.

How long can DCO stay in service between oil changes?

DCO delivers lasting protection across multiple competition events. Competition drain intervals should be governed by oil analysis rather than a fixed mileage. When the truck is run outside of competition, follow the OEM drain interval listed in the engine owner manual, or extend that interval with oil analysis.

Can DCO be mixed with conventional or other synthetic diesel oils?

The formula is compatible with other conventional and synthetic engine oils, but mixing shortens the oil's life expectancy and reduces the performance benefits. Extended drain intervals are not supported when oils have been mixed, and aftermarket oil additives are not recommended for use with AMSOIL synthetic diesel oils.

Does running DOMINATOR 20W-50 affect a vehicle or engine warranty?

Using AMSOIL synthetic lubricants does not void a new vehicle or equipment manufacturer warranty, and AMSOIL products are backed by the AMSOIL Limited Warranty. Match the engine application to the proper grade with the AMSOIL Vehicle Lookup Guide before changing oil.

Which OEM specifications does DCO meet?

DCO is engineered for performance-modified diesel engines where the builder wants a competition diesel oil. Confirm the current service categories and application limits on the live AMSOIL product page before use.
