AMSOIL SAE 30 Break-In Oil is a friction-modifier-free engine oil engineered for the first running hours and miles of new and freshly rebuilt high-performance and racing engines. The straight 30-weight viscosity, conventional base oils, and high-zinc anti-wear chemistry are tuned for one job: seat the rings against the cylinder wall while shielding flat-tappet camshafts, lifters, and bearings during the highest-wear period of an engine's life.
Friction-modifier-free formula for ring seating
Modern service-fill motor oils contain friction modifiers that resist controlled wear. During break-in, that resistance is the wrong outcome. Break-In Oil deliberately omits friction modifiers so the sharp peaks left on freshly honed cylinder walls can flatten in a controlled way. The result is more contact area between the ring face and the bore, a tight dynamic seal, and gains in compression, horsepower, and torque once the rings finish seating.
Insufficient seating leaves peaks that prevent ring contact and valleys that pool and burn oil. Excess wear glazes the cylinder. Break-In Oil sits in the narrow window between those failure modes so the bore finishes with the surface profile a finished engine needs.
High ZDDP for flat-tappet camshaft and lifter protection
New flat-tappet camshafts and lifters arrive unseasoned and must be heat-cycled to reach full hardness. They are splash-lubricated rather than pressure-fed, which means the oil film is the only line of defense against scuffing and lobe wear during those first heat cycles. Break-In Oil carries 2,200 ppm zinc and 2,000 ppm phosphorus to deliver the heat-activated ZDDP wear protection a flat-tappet valvetrain needs through this period.
The same chemistry helps protect rocker arms, lifter bores, and other splash-lubricated wear points common in performance valvetrains, including engines fitted with high-tension valve springs and aggressive lobe profiles.
Increased film strength for rods and main bearings
High-performance and racing builds add stress that production motor oils were not formulated to absorb. Higher cylinder pressure, larger camshafts, and stiffer valve springs raise the load on rod and main bearings. The base oils in Break-In Oil are selected to maintain a thicker, more durable hydrodynamic film at those pressures, helping prevent metal-to-metal contact while the bearings settle into their final clearances.
SAE 30 viscosity for stable break-in film
The single-grade SAE 30 viscosity gives the engine builder a known, stable hot film without the polymer viscosity-index improvers used in multi-grade oils. Kinematic viscosity of 11.5 cSt at 100 C, viscosity index of 111, and flash point of 230 C (446 F) by ASTM D445, ASTM D2270, and ASTM D92 keep film thickness consistent through dyno pulls and the first street miles. A four-ball wear scar of 0.43 mm by ASTM D4172 confirms the wear-protection performance the additive package is built around.
Recommended applications and service intervals
Break-In Oil is intended for new or freshly rebuilt high-performance and racing engines that call for an SAE 30 oil during break-in. Always defer to the engine builder's or manufacturer's break-in instructions when one exists. After break-in, drain Break-In Oil and refill with a high-performance AMSOIL synthetic motor oil that meets the builder's or manufacturer's specification.
Light-to-moderate-load street or run-stand break-in: roughly 500 miles is a common target, and total break-in should not exceed 1,000 miles (1,600 km) before changing to a synthetic service-fill oil.
Dyno break-in for race engines: typically 10 to 15 minutes is enough to seat the rings, with a 15-minute run above 2,500 rpm used to season a flat-tappet camshaft.
Powersports caution: many motorcycles, ATVs, and dirt bikes use a wet clutch, a shared engine-transmission sump, or a dry sump. Break-In Oil is not designed for wet-clutch friction control or high-shear gear sumps, so confirm the engine builder's break-in recommendation before using it in those applications.
Outside of high-performance and racing service, follow the equipment manufacturer's break-in instructions and required viscosity grade rather than substituting Break-In Oil.
Indicators that the rings have finished seating include shrinking oil residue at the exhaust ports, stable leak-down test results, and a horsepower curve that flattens after several pulls. After the change to a synthetic service-fill oil, pair the new fill with a clean filter and follow the synthetic oil's recommended drain interval going forward. Aftermarket ZDDP boosters or supplemental anti-wear additives are not required during break-in; the additive package in this oil is already balanced for the job.

We have been using this oil for 3 years in a 7.90 jr dragster. It outperforms most name brand oils in Friction, heat brake down, and fuel contamination (alcohol) The only thing I noticed with this purchase was the color of the oil was a little darker out of the container, normally it's a bright red like transmission fluid. Not sure if there was a change in formula or there was a slight more zinc added by miss calibrated mixture?

The film strength and ZDDP package are aimed squarely at protecting cam lobes, lifters, rockers, and rod and main bearings during the highest-wear period of the engine's life.
Can it be used in a motorcycle, ATV, or other powersports engine?
Powersports engines deserve close inspection before any break-in oil is poured in. Wet-clutch motorcycles, motorcycles with a shared engine-transmission sump, and dry-sump systems can each present problems for an oil that was not designed around those constraints. Break-In Oil is built for high-performance automotive and racing engines, not wet-clutch friction control or high-shear gear sump duty, so the engine builder's or manufacturer's break-in instructions should be followed for those machines.
What oil should replace it after break-in?

How can the engine builder tell when the rings are seated?
