AMSOIL 20W-50 100% Synthetic Hydrostatic Transmission Fluid is a high-zinc, full-synthetic fluid built for hydrostatic transaxles, wheel-motor circuits, and pump-and-motor drives that call for a 15W-50 or 20W-50 hydrostatic fluid. The formula is engineered for commercial and prosumer zero-turn, stand-on and riding mowers operating under continuous, severe-service heat, where conventional motor oils thin out and lose responsiveness.
High-zinc anti-wear protection for hydrostatic drives
In many zero-turn mowers, internal oil pressure drives the wheel motors. Once tolerances inside those motors widen from wear, pressure drops, ground speed falls and the machine loses responsiveness. AMSOIL 20W-50 Synthetic Hydrostatic Transmission Fluid carries a high level of zinc-based anti-wear additive that holds the tight clearances inside hydrostatic pumps and motors. Independent four-ball wear testing per ASTM D4172B (40 kg load, 75 degrees C, 1,200 rpm, one hour) returned a 0.42 mm wear scar, confirming the film strength needed to keep meshing gears and rotating groups separated under load.
Shear-stable viscosity in commercial heat
Hydrostatic transmissions in zero-turn mowers can exceed 230 degrees F (110 degrees C) during continuous mowing. Conventional fluids and motor oils used as a substitute can shear and thin under those conditions, which collapses the protective film and bleeds off pressure. The synthetic base oils in this 20W-50 are naturally resistant to both mechanical shear and thermal thinning, holding kinematic viscosity at 17.2 cSt at 100 degrees C and 137.3 cSt at 40 degrees C per ASTM D445, with a 137 viscosity index per ASTM D2270.

High ambient summer temperatures combined with hydrostatic-transmission operating temperatures above 230 degrees F (110 degrees C) cause many conventional fluids to oxidize and lay down deposits on charge pumps, check valves, and motor swash plates. Compatibility with the hydrostatic drive train
The formula is compatible with other synthetic and conventional motor oils and transmission fluids, which simplifies a top-off in the field. The left hydro on my toro mower felt like it was jumping when I rode on a hillside . After changing the hydro filters and replacing with amsoil 20W-50 hydro trans fluid it feels real smooth now.

What fluid does a zero-turn or riding mower hydrostatic transmission need?
It depends on the machine. Many commercial and prosumer hydrostatic transaxles, wheel-motor pumps and Tuff Torq-style integrated transmissions specify a 15W-50 or 20W-50 hydrostatic fluid meeting API SM, SL, SJ, SH, or SG. Is this the same as engine oil or hydraulic oil from the parts store?
