AMSOIL SAE 30 100% Synthetic Powershift Transmission Fluid is the mid-viscosity grade in the AMSOIL Powershift family, engineered for high-torque powershift transmissions, oil-cooled wet brakes, hydraulic circuits, and final drives in moderate-climate heavy equipment. The product code is CTJ, and the formulation meets Caterpillar TO-4, Allison C-4, Komatsu KES 07.868.1, ZF TE-ML 03C, and Dana powershift requirements in a single shear-stable synthetic fluid.
Friction control for clutch, brake, and torque-converter performance
SAE 30 Synthetic Powershift Transmission Fluid is compatible with the metallic and non-metallic friction materials used in modern powershift packs and oil-immersed brakes. Frictional characteristics are tuned to the Caterpillar TO-4 friction window, which governs clutch holding torque, oil-cooled brake feel, and torque-converter behavior. Stable friction across temperature helps prevent clutch glazing, friction-surface deposits, and the brake chatter and squawk that surface when the wrong fluid is run in TO-4 hardware.
Responsive yet smooth clutch engagement, consistent power transmission through clutches and synchronizers, and predictable brake modulation are core design targets, along with hydraulic-side response on machines that share a transmission-and-hydraulic sump.
Wear protection for sustained high-torque service
SAE 30 Powershift Transmission Fluid meets the wear and frictional requirements of the Caterpillar TO-4 specification. Synthetic base oils and a shear-stable additive system hold the SAE 30 grade through service life, so gears, bearings, planetary pinions, and bushings stay inside their designed oil-film envelope when crawlers, loaders, and graders are pushed at full load. Four-Ball Wear scar measured under ASTM D4172B at 40 kg, 75 degrees C, and 1,200 rpm is 0.45 mm.
High-temperature stability and cold-weather flow
In high heat, the formulation resists oxidation and inhibits the varnish, deposits, and sludge that gum up valve bodies and hydraulic spools. The fluid also pulls heat away from clutch packs and torque converters, which run hot during slow, high-torque duty cycles like steep-grade pushing or sustained ripping. In cold-start conditions, a pour point of minus 43 degrees C (minus 45 degrees F) keeps the SAE 30 grade pumpable for dependable startup and post-startup protection in winter yards.
Copper corrosion, rust, and foam control
Copper bushings, brass synchronizers, and yellow-metal thrust washers are common inside powershift assemblies. SAE 30 Synthetic Powershift Transmission Fluid protects these parts from copper corrosion and guards iron and steel components against rust during seasonal storage. Anti-foam chemistry keeps the fluid from aerating in churned, high-speed gear sumps, which preserves film strength under load and protects against metal-to-metal contact.
Shear stability across long service intervals
Powershift duty cycles attack viscosity. The shear-stable polymer system in SAE 30 Powershift Transmission Fluid is designed to keep the SAE 30 grade in spec instead of thinning to a 20-grade partway through a change interval. Holding grade matters most in oil-cooled wet brakes and hydraulic-actuated clutches, where film thickness drives both component life and the way the machine actually feels to the operator.
Recommended applications and service intervals
SAE 30 Synthetic Powershift Transmission Fluid is the typical TO-4 choice for moderate-climate heavy equipment, including dozers, wheel loaders, crawler tractors, backhoe loaders, cranes, off-road fork trucks, harbor-handling equipment, railway equipment, mining equipment, road graders, and commercial marine applications. Match the grade to the equipment OEM viscosity chart, or use the AMSOIL vehicle lookup guide to confirm application match before changing fluid.
Caterpillar* TO-4 powershift transmissions, oil-cooled brakes, hydraulic circuits, and final drives calling for an SAE 30 TO-4 fluid.
Allison* C-4 transmissions and Komatsu* KES 07.868.1 applications calling for the SAE 30 viscosity.
ZF* TE-ML 03C and Dana* powershift transmissions requiring an SAE 30 TO-4 fluid.
For colder climates, AMSOIL SAE 10W Synthetic Powershift Transmission Fluid is the lighter grade; for hotter climates and SAE 50 service, AMSOIL SAE 50 Synthetic Powershift Transmission Fluid covers Rockwell/Eaton/Fuller CD-50 manual-transmission applications. Outside the United States and Canada, follow regional product availability and the equipment OEM service chart.
SAE 30 Synthetic Powershift Transmission Fluid is fully compatible with other TO-4 fluids used in powershift applications. To install, drain the existing fluid, replace the transmission filter if equipped, and refill with the appropriate Powershift Transmission Fluid viscosity. Follow OEM drain intervals; oil analysis is recommended before extending change intervals beyond the equipment manufacturer schedule. Aftermarket friction modifiers are not recommended in TO-4 service.

I have been using this product in the rear end of my 1971 Flextrack Nodwell snow cat for over ten years. It performs well with wet brakes and keeps the gear box well protected and cool.

Best transmission in oil by far.
I use this in all of our manual transmissions and so far I like what see smoother shifts. The guys are very hard on the trucks so I want the best in them.

Never disappoints
Was doing a clutch on a Eaton 13 speed and decided to replace the oil not knowing the status of the oil that was in the transmission. Oil looked fine but replaced anyway and so glad I did because it actually shifts so much smoother now. I love amsoil products and they will never let you down!
What is Caterpillar TO-4 fluid and why does it matter?
Caterpillar TO-4 is the friction and wear specification Caterpillar created for powershift transmissions, oil-cooled brakes, hydraulic systems, and final drives. The TO-4 friction window is tighter than passenger-car automatic transmission fluid: too slippery and the clutches glaze, too grippy and the brakes chatter. SAE 30 Synthetic Powershift Transmission Fluid is formulated to the TO-4 friction and wear targets and supplies the SAE 30 grade many TO-4 machines call for.
Is SAE 30 Powershift the same as SAE 30 motor oil?
No. The SAE 30 designation refers only to viscosity at 100 degrees C. SAE 30 motor oil carries an API engine specification and an additive system tuned for combustion byproducts. SAE 30 Powershift Transmission Fluid carries TO-4, C-4, Komatsu KES, and ZF transmission specifications, with a friction-modifier package built for clutches, wet brakes, and torque converters. The two fluids are not interchangeable.
Will SAE 30 Powershift work in an Allison C-4 application?
Yes. SAE 30 Synthetic Powershift Transmission Fluid meets Allison C-4 in addition to Caterpillar TO-4 and ZF TE-ML 03C. Some Allison and Caterpillar machines call for SAE 10W or SAE 50 instead of SAE 30 based on ambient temperature and duty cycle, and the equipment OEM service chart shows which Powershift viscosity fits the operating range.
How does SAE 30 compare with SAE 10W and SAE 50 in the Powershift family?
SAE 10W (CTG) is the cold-climate grade with the lowest pour point and the lightest 100 degrees C viscosity. SAE 30 (CTJ) is the moderate-climate, all-around heavy-equipment grade that fits most TO-4 service charts. SAE 50 (CTL) is the heavy grade for hot climates, sustained high-torque duty, and Rockwell/Eaton/Fuller CD-50 manual-transmission applications. The Powershift family is built so a fleet can stock the grades that match its machines and seasons.
Can SAE 30 Powershift be mixed with conventional TO-4 fluid already in the sump?
Yes. SAE 30 Synthetic Powershift Transmission Fluid is fully compatible with other TO-4 fluids used in powershift applications. For best results, drain the existing fluid, replace the transmission filter if equipped, and refill with SAE 30 Powershift Transmission Fluid. Mixing in service should be limited to top-offs while a machine is being transitioned to the synthetic.
Does running this synthetic fluid void the equipment OEM warranty?
No. Using a fluid that meets the OEM-required specification, in this case Caterpillar TO-4 and the matching Allison, Komatsu, ZF, or Dana spec, satisfies the lubricant requirement of the equipment warranty. SAE 30 Synthetic Powershift Transmission Fluid is also backed by the AMSOIL Limited Warranty for the product itself.
