For maximum success, racers need to be confident their transmission is going to shift smoothly and operate properly no matter how hard they push their vehicle. Powerful, high-torque racing applications, however, place enormous stress on transmissions. Fluids incapable of withstanding intense heat and shearing forces can break down, leading to damaging sludge, wear, and poor shift quality.

AMSOIL Super Shift Racing Transmission Fluid is a synthetic racing ATF engineered for drag race automatics running high-stall converters, manualized valve bodies, and trans-brake clutch packs, where full-throttle launches and elevated sump temperatures push ordinary fluid past its limits. Built on shear-stable synthetic base oils with a racing friction package, Super Shift serves automatic transmissions specifying Allison C-4 or Ford Type F fluid, including TH350, TH400, Powerglide, C4, C6, and 727 TorqueFlite race builds.
Heat resistance and clean operation
Drag race automatics, trans-brake launches and high-stall converters generate sump temperatures that quickly oxidize ordinary fluid. Super Shift acts as a heat transfer fluid and, by controlling clutch slippage, helps reduce operating temperatures inside hot transmissions. Its oxidative and thermal stability inhibits the formation of varnish, deposits and sludge so clutches, valve bodies, and cooler circuits stay clean across a season of full-throttle passes. A low Pour Point of -48°C (-54°F) under ASTM D97 keeps the fluid mobile for dependable startup and post-startup protection on cool mornings at the track.
Smooth, positive shifts under load
Super Shift carries a friction package selected specifically for racing duty. The fluid delivers high holding capacity for maximum torque transfer through the clutch packs and brake bands, virtually eliminating slippage, promoting positive engagement, and improving overall shift performance. For race builds running stall converters, manualized valve bodies or trans-brakes, the friction profile translates to crisper shifts and more consistent sixty-foot times.
Wear protection for clutches, bushings, and bearings
Repeated full-throttle launches load every clutch, bushing, and bearing in the transmission. Super Shift uses a robust additive system paired with shear-stable base oils that help prevent viscosity loss across the service life of the fluid. Four-Ball Wear Test results of 0.35 mm scar (ASTM D4172B at 40 kg, 75°C, 1200 rpm, 1 hr) reflect a tough boundary film that protects clutches, bearings, and bushings, helping racers reduce rebuild frequency on hard-used equipment.
Shear stability and viscosity control
Synthetic base stocks deliver kinematic viscosity of 7.1 cSt at 100°C and 41.9 cSt at 40°C with a Viscosity Index of 132 (ASTM D445 and ASTM D2270). The formula resists the viscosity loss that mechanical shear can cause in conventional racing ATFs, holding film thickness between gear teeth, planetary pinions, and clutch interfaces during sustained periods of applied pressure and high torque. NOACK Volatility of 6.6 percent (ASTM D5800) limits evaporative loss in hot pans, supporting consistent performance pass after pass.
Corrosion and foam control
Race transmissions sit between events, sometimes for weeks at a time, and that storage window is when corrosion and rust attack internal parts. Super Shift contains corrosion inhibitors that protect ferrous components during prolonged storage and a foam control additive that preserves responsive clutch plate engagement under aerated conditions. Flash Point of 246°C (475°F) and Fire Point of 262°C (504°F) under ASTM D92 reflect a high thermal margin built into the formula for severe pan environments.
Recommended applications and service intervals
Super Shift is designed for automatic transmissions coupled to high-horsepower, high-torque engines and for transmissions specifying Allison C-4 or Ford Type F fluid. The fluid is intended for race-only and severe-duty applications, not as a Dexron VI replacement in modern daily drivers. Service intervals are dictated by the race program and inspection schedule rather than a fixed mileage cap; the published typical properties cover the in-service performance window for the formula.
Suggested applications include drag racing cars and trucks, monster trucks, stock cars, off-road 4x4 vehicles, and street hot rods.
Compatible race builds include TH350, TH400, Powerglide, C4, C6, and 727 TorqueFlite automatics calling for Allison C-4 or Ford Type F fluid.
Not recommended as a replacement for Ford MERCON, GM DEXRON, or Chrysler ATF+ type fluids in passenger vehicle and truck transmissions, where it may cause erratic shift patterns, chattering, or noise.
For confirmation of correct application match in any specific transmission, work through the AMSOIL vehicle lookup guide.
Super Shift is compatible with other automatic transmission fluids, however, mixing fluids should be minimized for best performance and service life. Pair every fluid change with a clean transmission filter and a pan drop for clutch material inspection. Aftermarket friction modifiers and shudder additives are not required and are not recommended in race builds running this formula.

This transmission fluid I have been using for many years and it has served me extremely well.

Would recommend this to a friend.
Must have for racing
Had to have my th400 rebuilt after 2 years behind a turbo LS and decided to switched over from Valvoline type f fluid and boy what a night and day difference. I thought the valvoline was good but this fluid is better . It bites and hard shifts quick , I don't even know if the transmission is slipping between gears. Definitely don't recommend putting this fluid in your daily driver.

What is Type F transmission fluid and which vehicles use it?
Type F is a Ford automatic transmission fluid specification with a friction profile that produces firm, positive shifts. The Type F profile was original equipment in many older Ford automatics and remains a common choice for transmission builders working on TH350, TH400, Powerglide, and similar race-focused automatics that prefer the higher coefficient of friction Type F provides. Super Shift meets both the Ford Type F fluid requirement and the Allison C-4 fluid requirement.
What is the best transmission fluid for drag racing?
The best drag race transmission fluid is one engineered for high-stall converter slip, trans-brake clutch loading and elevated sump temperatures, with a friction package that produces firm engagement. Super Shift is built specifically for that environment, with shear-stable synthetic base stocks, a Viscosity Index of 132 (ASTM D2270) and a Four-Ball Wear scar of 0.35 mm under ASTM D4172B test conditions.
Can Super Shift be used as a Dexron or MERCON replacement in a daily driver?
No. Super Shift is not recommended as a replacement for Ford MERCON, GM DEXRON, or Chrysler ATF+ type fluids in passenger vehicle and truck transmissions, as the racing friction profile may cause erratic shift patterns, chattering, or noise. For street vehicles requiring a multi-vehicle ATF, see the AMSOIL ATF guide.
Is Super Shift compatible with other transmission fluids?
Super Shift is compatible with other automatic transmission fluids, however, for best performance and service life mixing fluids should be minimized. A complete drain, pan drop and filter service before switching to Super Shift produces the most consistent shift behavior at the track.
Does Super Shift fit a Powerglide, TH350, or TH400?
Yes for race builds calling for Allison C-4 or Ford Type F fluid. Powerglide, TH350, TH400, C4, C6 and 727 TorqueFlite race builds frequently specify a Type F friction profile, and Super Shift meets that requirement. To verify the recommended fluid for a specific factory or rebuilt transmission, check the AMSOIL vehicle lookup guide.
Does using AMSOIL fluid void a transmission warranty?
No. Using AMSOIL synthetic lubricants does not void manufacturer warranties when the fluid meets the specifications listed in the owner manual. AMSOIL products are backed by a Limited Warranty. Performance that falls outside the listed Allison C-4 or Ford Type F specifications, or that originates from transmissions modified beyond the original manufacturer design, is not covered.
