AMSOIL ISO 68 100% Synthetic Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil

AMSOIL ISO 68 100% Synthetic Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil (product code HVJ) is the heaviest grade in the high-VI synthetic hydraulic series, built for demanding industrial, mobile, and high-temperature systems that specify ISO VG 68. The formula combines a synthetic base, varnish-control chemistry, and a zinc-type anti-wear additive package to keep gear, vane, and piston pumps clean and protected.

Anti-varnish technology for cleaner systems

Synthetic Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil ISO 68 is fortified with anti-varnish additives that chemically react with the building blocks of varnish to inhibit its formation. That keeps valves, servos, and tight-tolerance components free of the gummy deposits that drive sluggish response, sticking spools, and unplanned downtime in heavy industrial circuits.

In severe oxidation testing, the formula resisted elevated heat and oxidation more effectively than a leading conventional hydraulic fluid, helping reduce the deposits that shorten fluid life and erode pump efficiency.

Year-round protection across wide temperatures

Naturally heat-resistant synthetic base oils resist thermal breakdown and hold protective viscosity at full operating temperature, supporting a strong lubricating film in tropical climates, mining hydraulics, paper-mill systems, and other heavy duty cycles. Without the wax content of conventional fluids, the fluid flows readily at cold start, with a pour point of minus 41 degrees Celsius (minus 42 degrees Fahrenheit).

The high viscosity index of 155 (ASTM D2270) keeps the fluid in grade through wide swings between cold starts and high operating temperatures, helping reduce pressure spikes and erratic operation tied to poor fluidity.

Shear-stable wear protection

The shear-stable formulation is fortified with the latest zinc-type anti-wear additives and passed the KRL Shear Test stay-in-grade requirement (15 percent maximum KV loss). Four-Ball Wear performance came in at a 0.41 mm scar (ASTM D4172, 40 kg, 1200 rpm, 75 degrees Celsius, 60 minutes), supporting protection for pumps, motors, valves, and other loaded components.

After 608 hours of strenuous pump testing in a Parker Hannifin (Denison) T6H20C Hybrid pump, piston shoes showed only moderate polishing and trace random scratches, and the vane pump cam ring exhibited only light polishing and trace scratching, confirming compatibility with bronze and other yellow-metal hardware common in industrial hydraulics.

Water control, foam control, and seal compatibility

Foam tendency in ASTM D892 Sequences I, II, and III stayed at 0/0, 35/0, and 0/0, and demulsibility under ASTM D1401 measured 40-40-0(20), supporting fast water separation in reservoirs that see condensation or process-water ingress. Copper Strip Corrosion at 100 degrees Celsius for three hours rated 1A (ASTM D130).

Seal compatibility passed elastomer testing on SRE-NBR1 at 100 degrees Celsius for 168 hours (ASTM D471), and rust protection passed both distilled and salt water testing under ASTM D665 A and B. Dielectric strength rated 45 kVAC under ASTM D877.

Industrial OEM and industry specifications

ISO 68 Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil meets the viscosity-retention and anti-wear requirements of Parker Hannifin (Denison) HF-0, HF-1, and HF-2; Vickers I-286-S and M-2950-S; DIN 51524 Parts 2 and 3; and Cincinnati Milacron P-69. The product fits high- and low-pressure gear, vane, and piston designs in stationary and mobile hydraulic systems, including circuits with bronze metallurgy where yellow-metal compatibility matters.

Recommended applications and service intervals

ISO 68 Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil is the right grade when the equipment manufacturer specifies an ISO VG 68 anti-wear hydraulic fluid with a high viscosity index, including large industrial presses and injection molding machines, paper mill hydraulics, mining equipment, sawmill and forestry hydraulics, marine deck equipment, and heavy mobile equipment operating in hot climates.

Mixing with conventional or different brand hydraulic fluids is not recommended because additive chemistries and base oil quality vary. To preserve varnish-control and anti-wear performance, drain the old fluid, replace the filter, and refill with the matching ISO grade. Aftermarket additives are not required.

Frequently asked questions

What is ISO 68 hydraulic oil?

ISO 68 hydraulic oil is a hydraulic fluid that meets ISO viscosity grade 68 under ASTM D2422, with a kinematic viscosity centered around 68 cSt at 40 degrees Celsius. AMSOIL ISO 68 100% Synthetic Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil measures 68.5 cSt at 40 degrees Celsius and 11.2 cSt at 100 degrees Celsius, with a viscosity index of 155 for stable performance across wide operating temperatures.

What weight is ISO 68 hydraulic oil?

ISO 68 is an industrial viscosity grade defined at 40 degrees Celsius, not an SAE crankcase weight. As a rough cross-reference, an ISO 68 hydraulic oil sits in the range of an SAE 20 motor oil and an SAE 80 gear oil at the same 40 degrees Celsius reference. Always match the OEM-specified ISO grade rather than substituting an SAE-rated engine or gear oil.

Is ISO 68 the same as AW 68 hydraulic oil?

Both call out an ISO viscosity grade 68 anti-wear hydraulic fluid. AW 68 is shorthand for a conventional anti-wear ISO 68. AMSOIL ISO 68 Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil is a synthetic high-VI anti-wear fluid that meets Vickers I-286-S, M-2950-S, Parker Hannifin (Denison) HF-0, HF-1, HF-2, DIN 51524 Parts 2 and 3, and Cincinnati Milacron P-69, so it covers the same equipment list while delivering broader temperature performance.

Can synthetic hydraulic oil be mixed with conventional hydraulic oil?

Mixing is not recommended. Synthetic and conventional hydraulic fluids use different additive chemistries and base oils, and mixing dilutes the varnish-control and anti-wear performance of the synthetic. For best results, drain the old fluid, replace the hydraulic filter, and refill with ISO 68 Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil at the same ISO grade.

Is synthetic hydraulic oil better than conventional?

For high-temperature, wide-temperature, and long-life service, the synthetic formulation offers measurable advantages, including stronger oxidation resistance, varnish control, KRL shear stability, and a low pour point of minus 41 degrees Celsius for cold-start fluidity. Conventional ISO 68 fluids without these protections are more prone to oxidation deposits, varnish, and viscosity loss in heavy duty cycles.

Where can ISO 68 Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil be used?

The fluid fits high- and low-pressure gear, vane, and piston pumps in stationary and mobile systems, including industrial presses, paper mill hydraulics, mining and forestry equipment, marine deck gear, and heavy mobile equipment in hot climates. It also fits circuits built with bronze and other yellow-metal hardware.

Does using AMSOIL hydraulic oil affect equipment warranty coverage?

Using AMSOIL synthetic lubricants does not void manufacturer warranties when the fluid meets the OEM-required specifications. ISO 68 Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil meets Parker Hannifin (Denison) HF-0, HF-1, HF-2, Vickers I-286-S and M-2950-S, DIN 51524 Parts 2 and 3, and Cincinnati Milacron P-69, and is backed by the AMSOIL Limited Warranty.
